Dark chapter in a long saga.
Revisado: 02-24-25
There are lots of likeable characters, but only the main character is actually allowed to win a fight... no matter how things seem to be going. Should have expected it; no characters are allowed success without the protagonist. Just like any other trope story the antagonists have cheats that negate any good done without the single golden boy. The book left me angry. Not at all palattable place to stop. The overall saga storyline is intriguing, but I think I'll skip all of the intermediate books until the final book in the series is released. Afterall, every book follows the same arc; team is regrouping after a fight, team capitalizes on the last almost win, team divides up to do seperate things, everyone almost wins but fails in some way, book ends with power levels gained from the latest almost victory. Rinse and repeat for the next book.

More Dragons and Magic. Excellent!
Revisado: 09-05-24
An engaging story in its own right, this book flows smoothly from the previous one in the series. It has a satisfying feeling of progression while massively expanding the complexity of the magic and a wider view of the state of humanity and dragons. I am glad that the end is not a cliff hanger because now the wait for the next book is all pleasant anticipation.

Where power is measured in cards, Arthur stands among the elite as a Legendary card wielder now forever linked to a frighteningly powerful dragon. Or Brixaby will be once he grows from the size of a parrot. Before that can happen, a chance encounter whisks Arthur and Brixaby away to a place they never thought possible: A new dragon hive outside the kingdom. This Free Hive doesn't suffer from the scourge that's infected the rest of the planet. It's a place where crafting using card powers is king.

Good Story and Engaging Characters
Revisado: 09-03-24
The world building, magic sytem, and characters are great. The maturing of the dragons also feels authentic. The 'almost' victories and losses leave a feeling of sublte dissatisfaction and fall flat due to overuse. Still I am excited to see where the next story will take us!

Historia
When quiet Orrin and his extroverted best friend, Daniel, were transported to a strange RPG-based world, not much changed between them. Daniel became a hero of legend, while Orrin remained his unobtrusive shadow. Only when they faced a particularly lethal foe did Orrin step out of his comfort zone and display his true worth—with powers he didn't know he had. Of course, Daniel got all the glory, but Orrin doesn't mind. He's just happy they're both still alive.

Engaging characters and system
Revisado: 08-18-24
The characters are just as engaging and relatable as the first book in the series. The magic system is engaging and the overarching storyline has a magnetic draw for the curious. The ending of this story is along the same vein as the end of Tolkien's The Two Towers (book not movie). All in all it feels like epic fantasy placed in a game system with this as an intermediate point in the overall plot.

Refreshing Character Loyalty
Revisado: 08-02-24
A fun progression fantasy in a complex world with monsters, villians, battles, and levels. My favorite part is the connections between the characters of the main team.

Call it book 6a.
Revisado: 07-28-24
There is a lot of good world building and the characters are still relatable enjoyable. However, unlike other books in the series this one leaves off halfway through the big challenge. Hearing about how the fates of a rather extensive set of characters weave together will have to wait until next book.

An interesting place to explore.
Revisado: 01-11-23
The beginning of the story felt full of cliché characters, but that may have just been to give readers a familiar toe-hold for the sprawling adventure to follow. It was a fun mental exercise to keep track of who was who in which world. While there are some fantastical creatures, and lots of swordplay/magical battles, this is more a story about the people and the magic that binds them together (or tears them apart). Very enjoyable.

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

Face first into a snow bank; not painful, but cold
Revisado: 10-26-22
After exhaustive explainations of the struggles to complete their various tasks, the series end is rather hollow. The story makes good use of Tolkien's oft mentioned truth that good times are enjoyed while in them, but not worth writing about. Some favorite characters are left with assumed joyful events entrusted to the readers to imagination, or fortold fortunes covered in retrospective summary like a textbook. The events of storyline import are vibrant and engaging, yet the end left me with an empty heart and a few tears.

Stagnant repeated internal musing minimal story
Revisado: 03-09-22
It was a struggle to finish. The performance was good, the world still interesting, the story a slog. Action and magic scenes stalled with stale moralizing playing on loop so frequently that it was possible to skip forward for minutes at a time and not miss anything new. The world building is as intriguing as the earlier books in the series, just burried in hours of looping recriminations or complaints. The actual storyline progression could have been covered thoroughly in 16 chapters.
