Fun, Light-hearted SF
Revisado: 08-30-09
This is a fun, well-read book that is refreshing for its silly yet endearing tone. The style of writing is reminiscent of early Douglas Adams books, but it doesn't wind up feeling derivative. The story moves at a good pace, the characters are goofy but lovable, and while this probably won't take home a pulitzer, I would highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a reprieve from the grim, gritty SF that seems to dominate these days.

In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men: Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication. Their lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time.

This book was a bit of a disappointment to me. I loved "Devil in the White City", and expected Thunderstruck to be its equal. However, the two plots of Thunderstruck just aren't as interesting as the plots in "White City" - Marconi is interesting, but it's a bit of a stretch to keep me invested in his plot. Crippen is also moderately interesting, but I found myself bored by the excessive detail and wishing that something truly captivating would happen.

Very disappointing!
Revisado: 12-18-06
After loving the previous books in the series as a sort of "guilty pleasure", this last book ruins all of the joy and spirit of the series. The characters I sympathized with in the previous books are rendered flat, and to make matters worse the new characters added (of which there are a ton) are not compelling or sympathetic either. I found myself actually yelling at the audiobook towards the end - Kaede and Takeo both wind up making terrible, out-of-character decisions just to fit a bad "prophecy" plot device.
I'd advise folks to skip this one, and stick with the better, more ambiguous ending of the first 3 novels.

Great listen!

A captivating story that takes a lot of traditional fantasy archetypes (curses, gods, and unwilling protagonists) and makes them new. The reader is also a superb voice actor.

Historia
Set during and after the First World War, A Very Long Engagement is the tale of a young woman's search for her fiancé who she believes might still be alive despite having officially been reported as "killed in the line of duty." Unable to walk since childhood, fearless Mathilde Donnay is undeterred in her quest as she scours the country for information about five wounded French soldiers who were brutally abandoned by their own troops. A Very Long Engagement is a mystery, a love story, and an extraordinary portrait of life in France before and after the War.

An excellent listen!
Revisado: 12-16-04
I thoroughly enjoyed the story - the plot follows Mathilde, a young french woman as she tries to discover what happened to her missing fiancee in the closing months of World War I.
The narrator was great, although the number of French names and places (pronounced with a flawless and therefore hard-to-follow French accent) that are introduced at the beginning of the book were a bit hard for me to keep up with. I got it figured out eventually, but I had a hard time distinguishing characters at first. The one weakness this audiobook has is one that all suspense audiobooks have - as the mystery evolved, I found myself wanting to go back and re-read certain crucial scenes that happen at the beginning of the book (which is pretty-near impossible with audiobooks).
Regardless, I highly recommend this audiobook!
