Historia
In the summer of 1994, when Molly Brodak was 13 years old, her father robbed 11 banks, until the police finally caught up with him while he was sitting at a bar drinking beer, a bag of stolen money plainly visible in the backseat of his parked car. Dubbed the "Mario Brothers Bandit" by the FBI, he served seven years in prison and was released, only to rob another bank several years later and end up back behind bars. In her powerful, provocative debut memoir, Brodak recounts her childhood and attempts to make sense of her complicated relationship with her father.

one of the angriest books I have read
Revisado: 01-30-22
brodak's ambivalence — toward her father, toward family, toward happiness, toward writing itself, and toward this world in general — steams off of every page. The reader perceives her sense of betrayal in her confession that she's unable to enjoy any fictional depiction of family, whether positive or negative; and the restless thrust of her prose seems fueled by the wounded desire to break the cycle of love and birth in which we all are caught. Excellent chapters on gambling (and other types of addiction) as a replacement for the larger, more chaotic experience of cyclical time share the stage w/ a despairing, neurotically detailed pursuit of closure between her brain and the brain of her father. What's missing between her excavation of the past and her speculation on her father's imagination's frontier is a notion of a third path, one that moves forward w/ purpose, into th future. But then that is not her problem, alone
(The audiobook narrator doesn't do Brodak a favour by putting mustard on every sentence. calm down, Emily)

would like to rec this book to everybody I know
Revisado: 12-05-21
Dreyfus & Kelly build their case for pantheism from th single speck of dust of a celebrated heroic act on a new York subway platform, and th speck gets "whooshed up" by an updraft into th upper atmosphere inhabited by th supercooled water droplets known as Moby Dick, Aeschylus, Homer, David Foster Wallace (& Roger Federer), Lou Gehrig, and Eat Pray Love -- building layers of icy clarity before hitting my car's windshield as gnocchi-sized hailstones in th climactic final chapter. A spectacular and shining read 🧚🏿🎇🔮

Useful for my job working w/ autistic people
Revisado: 11-26-21
somewhat robotically read, though the content was always affecting and entirely relatable -- a good reminder to take a broader view of behaviour and to ask WHY w/r/t instances of meltdowns, repetitive speech, stimming, etc -- not only b/c we will, often enough, w/ practice, arrive @ a sensible answer -- but also b/c to ask and to be open to such an answer is the basis of a loving and respectful relationship 🌬️🕊️🗨️

needed some kind of visual element
Revisado: 09-21-21
the voice acting was fine in general, w/ Bebe Neuwirth as a conspicuous standout. Many of the stories seem built around vague platitudes -- "A revolution begins as a dream"; "Art confers immortality"; "Death rules supreme over nearly everyone"; "Evil is banal" ...... Overall effect is slight w/o th pictures. Pretty good for a night road trip though

weird how bland and wholesome and NPR-esque this was -- mebbe rock'n'roll stars are interesting only when they're giving th man th finger while running up his expense account, hoovering all th drukqs, and furiously shagging everything under th sun; and not when they're vaguely endorsing paths to wellness. Historia
Diagnosed with pathological demand avoidance (PDA) in his teenage years, Harry Thompson looks back with wit and humour at the ups and downs of family and romantic relationships, school, work and mental health, as well as his teenage struggle with drugs and alcohol. By embracing neurodiversity and emphasising that autistic people are not flawed human beings, Thompson demonstrates that some merely need to take the 'scenic route' in order to flourish and reach their full potential.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.
