Historia
We all worry about what others think of us. We all long to succeed and fear failure. We all suffer, to a greater or lesser degree, usually privately and with embarrassment, from status anxiety. For the first time, Alain de Botton gives a name to this universal condition and sets out to investigate both its origins and possible solutions. He looks at history, philosophy, economics, art, and politics, and reveals the many ingenious ways that great minds have overcome their worries.

Short and enlightening
Revisado: 11-01-24
Very short, very thought provoking, very instructive and actually very entertaining. Alain de Botton takes us from the creation of the word “snob” to the meaning of wealth and of happiness, ending with very sound solutions to our largest anxieties.

Excruciantingly boring.
Revisado: 10-25-24
I love mind mapping, but I found nothing new in this book. It’s linear and boring—the opposite of what I would expect from mind mapping principles. Overall, it’s too basic for my taste. It might be suitable for students who are new to the concept, but even then, the level of repetition and exaggerated detail tests anyone’s patience. The narrator speaks. Like. A poor. News. Anchor. It’s probably more bearable at 1.25x speed, but even then, the contents are not worth it.

Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

What a great storyteller Whoopi is! Just her voice makes it worthwhile. I feared the story would be lame, but no! It is full of striking life lessons! This book is a gem and I can’t recommend it enough.

Great fun!
Revisado: 09-09-24
I was attracted by the idea of cat supervillains, but the story completely won me by the location of the super villain volcanic island lair: Saint Genevieve Island! From then on, it only improved. The villain business strategies are enlightening. The humor is dark and up to date with recent developments in history, science and marvel movies. There is even some nice morality to it all, on sexism, unions and human rights. And the cats. I loved it.

But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

Immortality. What next?
Revisado: 05-31-24
The Expanse series just keeps getting better, and ‘Tiamat’s Wrath’ is full of surprises. The settings are great, from Naomi’s confinement to the open gardens of Laconia. The topics are awesome: immortality, consciousness and an impossible war running in the background. The mysterious enemy starts to become clearer, too. I’m excited to read the next book!

Historia
About 2,500 years ago, Plato wrote a set of dialogues that depict Socrates in conversation. The way Socrates asks questions, and the reasons why, amount to a whole way of thinking. This is the Socratic method - one of humanity’s great achievements. More than a technique, the method is an ethic of patience, inquiry, humility, and doubt. It is an aid to better thinking, and a remedy for bad habits of mind, whether in law, politics, the classroom, or tackling life’s big questions at the kitchen table.

Great book but narration could be better
Revisado: 02-03-24
The book starts with a very fitting allegory: as the Roman civilization built a marvelous plumbing network which, eventually, may have contributed to its downfall through lead intoxication, so did our civilization build a wondrous information network which, eventually, may destroy us through toxic social media. Our society is addicted to easy, fast information. But such addiction leads to the disuse of rational thinking and argument. The book explores Plato’s dialogues method of thinking and teaching. I realized I had already been using it inadvertently in my classes, but not in the most effective way. This book has been a great help to understand this and to better structure not only my classes but also my reasoning.

Historia
Ask a scientist about Hollywood, and you'll probably get eye rolls. But ask someone in Hollywood about science, and they'll see dollar signs: Moviemakers know that science can be the source of great stories, with all the drama and action that blockbusters require. That's a huge mistake, says Randy Olson: Hollywood has a lot to teach scientists about how to tell a story - and, ultimately, how to do science better. With Houston, We Have a Narrative, he lays out a stunningly simple method for turning the dull into the dramatic.

Strongly, very strongly recommended for scientific writing!
Revisado: 02-03-24
Nowadays, any scientist must publish in scientific peer-reviewed journals or be ignored. Most scientific papers are absolutely boring, and feel as boring to write as to read. But Randy Olson provides simple rules and models to write interesting scientific papers. Now I can’t wait to write my next papers inspired by the ABT model. They will be so engaging that no one will be able to put them down!

Jump from a plane?
Revisado: 03-02-23
After failing to reach NBA and failing to become and architect, the author managed to fail more than failing to catch my attention in the first chapter. Where the stated objective of the book is to give readers the courage to jump from a plane, it gave me enough despair to wish to do it with no parachute. Why did I pay 2€ for this?? The bonus material in the audio version seem to have been added to have some more time in this very short and empty audiobook. I endured up to teve third chapter of the audiobook because I was jogging and this was the only audiobook available.
If you are considering reading this book, don’t. The right message is not failure but perseverance. The title is misleading and shows that this is just another self-help book written because the genre sells well.
