I liked all the poems which are better when heard orally. That’s all I have to say.

Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

DKG is a great storyteller
Revisado: 01-02-25
The book’s coverage of the LBJ years were powerful and eye-opening. As a Boomer I had always seen LBJ as a stubborn and egotistical to the detriment of the country. DKG revealed a man ruled less by blind ambition and more by empathy. I hope history will be as kind and sympathetic to President Johnson as DKG has been in this wonderful book

Historia
In The Extinction of Experience, Christine Rosen investigates the cultural and emotional shifts that accompany our embrace of technology. In warm, philosophical prose, Rosen reveals key human experiences at risk of going extinct, including face-to-face communication, sense of place, authentic emotion, and even boredom. Considering cultural trends, like TikTok challenges and mukbang, and politically unsettling phenomena, like sociometric trackers and online conspiracy culture, Rosen exposes an unprecedented shift in the human condition, one that habituates us to alienation and control.

AI Kills the Human Spirit
Revisado: 12-04-24
Too bad AI groupies will for the most part be clueless to Rosen’s message. I’ve witnessed it with members of my extended family. They have no interest in philosophy or history. They’re indifferent to past ages and the cultural contributions made to the present. As William Faulkner said, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

Too much sadism for my liking
Revisado: 12-04-24
I had to fast forward over some of the gorier details. Nice, however, to meet a 30-something Bond, smart but still learning the rope. I love everything Anthony Horowitz writes or produces but in the future I’ll steer clear of 007.

Wonderful story of many celebrated figures who came to Florida going back to de Soto.
Opened my eyes to what is all around me as a central Florida resident as well as being a descendant of ancestors who have been here for four generations. What a great synopsis.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

Gripping Tale
Revisado: 07-06-24
In Harms Way grabbed my attention and never let go. However I skipped the chapter on the shark attacks. Unfortunately the rest of the book is filled with enough horror stories and tragedies that I can’t believe anyone survived the destruction of their ship. Shame on the upper echelons of Naval command.

Historia
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Too many red herrings
Revisado: 05-17-24
Lucy Foley does a great job moving stories along with cliffhangers. The Hunting Party went overboard with them. The victim was no surprise but the perpetrator was. The conclusion was a disappointment.
