Historia
It is said that a man is grown by his past, and so it was with William Brewer. Before he took command of HMS Defiant in a hurricane and before he hunted pirates in HMS Revenge, Brewer endured a crucible of fire that molded him into the legend he became. Fresh from the tutelage of Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena, Brewer signs on for a cruise under Captain Bush in HMS Lydia to the Mediterranean to battle the Barbary Pirates.

Write seems to be a Bonapartist
Revisado: 06-15-23
I've stuck around for 3 books but can't go any further. This is not Hornblower or even close to the quality that the original Hornblower novels had, Outside of a commander who seems to have the worst luck in the world to account for an abysmal showings in battle but the writer seems to have a mancrush on Napoleon. From Hornblower's child calling Napoleon his 'uncle' to every third sentence referring to the man, it is Bonaparte this and Bonaparte that..."Our friend" Bonaparte.

Going well then SPLAT!!!
Revisado: 09-29-21
Some spoilers in this review. You are warned.
We had a reasonable SCIFI story going even if how long it would take to reverse engineer and build things is greatly compressed, but about 3/4s of the way through this book we meet a new 'super race'. Still not a big deal....until they explain why human exists on other planets.
It seems that 12 thousand years ago, dinosaurs lived with humans on earth and the meteor that killed the dinosaurs also is the same one that caused the biblical flood.... but thankfully this advanced race evacuated some of the humans thinking the Earth was going to be destroyed.
I couldn't take it... I turned off the story that instant.

Started out humorous then went off the deep end
Revisado: 02-24-20
The story is about Tom Stranger of Stranger and Stranger Intergalactic insurance company. From stopping an alien invasion to arguing in front of an arbitrator (Chuck Norris) the story started out fairly humorous but then the author decided he needed to interject his STRONG conservative political agenda into the story and it went downhill fast.
Truly regret giving this author a dime.

An Ending without closure
Revisado: 12-15-19
The story ends with what should be completion of major space battles with the last major enemy destroyed but it left SO many unanswered questions. I felt like I just watched a marathon with the runners having run into a brick wall at the end. Splat, race over. Yes there was a winner, but no sense of completion, no feel of victory, too many issues raised in the story without a satisfying ending to them.
It can be said that leaving it open-ended allows each reader decide on how the happily ever after is completed or allows the author to return to the series at a later date, but still....I feel incomplete.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Couldn't get to the end
Revisado: 06-11-19
This is the first John Grisham novel I had to just stop listening to. Hard to review what I hated about the book without deep spoilers so I'll just say that the first 7-8 hours deal with a murder, a murderer who offers no defense for his actions so not much legal action takes place. The second part, which finally lost me is WWII history tale to give a background story on the murderer. I couldn't make it to what is supposed to be a third part. It just wasn't worth that many more hours of my life to get to the end.

Historia
The murders of a team of United Nations scientists in El Salvador.... A deadly collision in the waterways off the city of Detroit.... An attack by tomb raiders on an archaeological site along the banks of the Nile.... Is there a link between these violent events? The answer may lie in the tale of an Egyptian princess forced to flee the armies of her father 3,000 years ago.

Suffers from the 'Batman Effect'
Revisado: 04-02-19
This story suffers from what I call the 'batman effect' which going back to the 60s TV show where batman did something really stupid, got caught and then the villain did something even more stupid and batman escaped.
An example in this book. The heroes KNOW people are trying to kill them and yet when they get to a location where no one else should be and see a vehicle there ahead of them, they don't, not even for a second take precautions or even comment on that someone could be there spying on them and then of course try to kill them.
Also when the heroes are captured and the villains plan to kill them, do they just shoot them? No...they get put into a location where they can make an elaborate escape. Again the batman effect.
Grand escapes are great, but the writer is just getting lazy at getting the heroes in danger.
