Historia
After years of bitter struggle, Trantor had at last completed its work - its Galactic Empire ruled all 200 million planets of the Galaxy...all but one. On a backward planet called Earth were those who nurtured bitter dreams of a mythical, half-remembered past when the planet was humanity’s only home. The other worlds despised it or merely patronized it - until a man from the past miraculously stepped through a time fault that spanned a millennium, living proof of Earth’s most preposterous claims.

Not the best Asimov, but the best voice
Revisado: 06-16-24
An engaging adventure story—prequel to the author’s famous Foundation novels—unfortunately marred by a juvenile love story. Asimov’s “Currents of Space” is much better. On the other hand, this new reader’s voice is perfect! When can we expect him to do the original Foundation trilogy?

The world’s leading economist of inequality presents a short but sweeping and surprisingly optimistic history of human progress toward equality despite crises, disasters, and backsliding, a perfect introduction to the ideas developed in his monumental earlier books.

At last, something brief from Piketty!
Revisado: 11-16-22
His previous books on economics are gigantic. This latest work is no less scholarly but short enough for me to get through. The arguments are always intriguing—though I disagree with many. For example, he rightly criticizes present day socialism and advocates a “decentralized” version, but fails to explain how this could be accomplished.

Historia
Published in six volumes between 1776 and 1781, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire - for all its renown - can be intimidating. It contains one point five million words, an estimated 8,000 footnotes, a cast of 10,000 historical figures, and a timeline of more than 1,000 years. Yet even today, Gibbon's historical chronicle demands to be understood.

Exceeded my expectations
Revisado: 03-11-21
Concentrated mostly on Ancient Rome (this professor’s academic specialty?) and connected religious beliefs with social and political developments as Rome grew from city-state to empire. As a result, the lectures gave me new insights into how a republic can disintegrate—maybe relevant to our own future.

Asimov’s best
Revisado: 04-04-20
Best novel in the author’s “Galactic Empire” series. The better known Foundation Trilogy is interesting but suffers from Asimov’s usual foible: fascinating ideas voiced by cardboard characters who mostly sit around talking. The Currents of Space, in contrast, has characters I care about and gives them a better balance of talk vs action.

Still relevant after all these years
Revisado: 03-30-17
Much has been revealed in cosmology since this book's publication in 1977. Even the "afterward" tacked on to the 1993 reprint (and included in the audiobook) predates the sensational discovery of accelerated cosmic expansion. Nevertheless, the 1960s observation of cosmic microwave background radiation and its fundamental implications for the first few minutes after the Big Bang have stood the test of time.
One caveat: the author does not shy away from detailed logical and quantitative reasoning. Frequent pausing for reflection is required. Keep your finger ready to hit the pause button!
