Not my favorite King novel
Revisado: 08-28-24
Unlike so many of King’s brilliant works, I had a hard time sticking with The Tommyknockers. It just didn’t have the same hook as, say, Thinner or The Shining. It may be that the story simply had too much going on, and bouncing around, to ever let me settle into it. Of course some of that could be the audio experience as opposed to actually reading it. I didn’t hate it. It just wasn’t one of his best.

Anne Heche reads The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, the story of nine-year-old Trisha McFarland who gets lost in the woods while on a walk with her family. Boston Red Sox closing pitcher Tom Gordon becomes Trisha's imaginary companion - and the key to her survival against an unidentified someone (or some thing) leaving death and destruction in its wake.

Enjoyed all but a single word
Revisado: 05-17-23
Good story and the narration by Anne Heche was mostly fine, though I thought the sound quality was a bit lacking. One pet peeve: as one who grew up in Appalachia, the name of these mountains is pronounced “Apple-La-Chin” NOT “Apple-Lay-Chin”. I took a star off of this performance for having to hear this word mispronounced repeatedly throughout the recording.

A smart, provocative look at how the American dream of single-family homes, white picket fences, and two-car garages became a lonely, overpriced nightmare, and how new trends in housing can help us live better.

Dry
Revisado: 05-09-23
I selected this book because I was interested in the subject matter. Unfortunately, it was just way too dry and lifeless for me to stick with it. I felt like I was listening to someone reading a textbook or a thesis. Oh, well, you win some you lose some.

Historia
The French Revolution casts a long shadow, one that reaches into our own time and influences our debates on freedom, equality, and authority. Yet it remains an elusive, perplexing historical event. Its significance morphs according to the sympathies of the viewer, who may see it as a series of gory tableaux, a regrettable slide into uncontrolled anarchy - or a radical reshaping of the political landscape. In this riveting new book, Ian Davidson provides a fresh look at this vital moment in European history. He reveals how it was an immensely complicated and multifaceted revolution....

Concise overview of an interesting but complicated period
Revisado: 10-07-22
This is a listenable overview, contained to a 15 hour reading, of an event so complex and subject to so many interpretations that it could easily be three or four times as long. I took a class on the French Revolution 30 years ago in undergrad school and did not remember very much of it. Recent world events renewed my interest, however, so I picked this up. It does not come off as a lecture or dry reading of a historical textbook. Instead, I thought the author and the narrator did a nice job of keeping it lively and engaging to the point where I could listen for long stints in my car without drifting. To keep this material engaging for hours is no easy task, as one could get easily lost in the morass of players and shifting events from this turbulent 5ish year period. I would definitely recommend this as a good introduction to anyone interested in learning more about the French Revolution.
