Historia
At dawn on March 2, 2002, America's first major battle of the 21st century began. Over 200 soldiers of the 101st Airborne and 10th Mountain Division flew into Afghanistan's Shah-i-Kotvalley - and into the mouth of a buzz saw. They were about to pay a bloody price for strategic, high-level miscalculations that underestimated the enemy's strength and willingness to fight.

Fantastic book.
Revisado: 04-27-22
Great book and a great overall history of the beginning of the GWOT. Sure John Chapman doesn't receive the credit he deserves but the book was written before everything was declassified. If you read this and want to continue the TRUE story of what happened in the Battle of Takur Ghar then read or listen to Alone at Dawn.

Historia
In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,000-foot peak of a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness, alone with the enemy closing in on three sides, beginning the most difficult and exceptional fight of his life.

Read about a REAL hero and research the truth!!
Revisado: 02-24-22
I started this book because I am a fan of military history and especially special forces. I wound up researching and finding out that my heroes are not always worth of the awards they get and some should have been awarded double. For anyone who doesn't know this is the first Congressional Medal of Honor that was recorded. There was a unmanned drone circling about the battle. It recorded the entire thing. I bet Britt Slabinski didn't know that or if he did then he never thought the footage would be declassified. Why does this matter? Well the reason is...... he left John Chapman alone on top of that mountain and ran. He then came back home and took credit for everything John Chapman did and he was awarded the Metal of Honor. There is a second video on YouTube. The one where Brit Slabinski lies about everything that happens. I don't know if anyone has ever had the Medal of Honor revoked but he deserves nothing. The leave no man behind is absolutely not what happened. I watch all of the videos when current service members are awarded the Medal of Honor and Britt Kelly Slabinski is never there. He must know he is a coward and a disgrace.
John Chapman deserves both medals. HE EARNED them both!!

Endless repetition!!
Revisado: 12-07-21
This book can be summed up by reading the titles of the chapters. At the opening of each chapter there is a title....example "chapters 2- list" followed up by twenty minutes discussing what a list is and why you need to make them. I had such high hopes when I found this audio book but I can sum it up by saying "Every tool is a broken record"!!

New Grass Revival live!!
Revisado: 07-05-21
I saw NGR live several times in the late 80s. They were incredible!! Seeing them at places like The Down Home in Johnson City Tenn. and McDibs in Black Mountain N.C. was filled with so much energy. It changed my music listening life.

Great book!! Great message!! Great narration by the author!! This book leads you on the story of two subjects that can cause a person great self hatred but helped me understand that kindness and compassion can be the cure for both and sometimes those choices aren't what dogma preaches!!

Historia
The Kingston Trio’s folk song “Tom Dooley” tells the story of the murder of Laura Foster, a simple country girl involved with returning Confederate soldier Tom Dula. But Tom was also engaged in a passionate affair with his childhood sweetheart, the beautiful - and married - Ann Melton. One May morning in 1866, Laura Foster stole her father’s horse and left home, telling a neighbor that she was eloping to Tennessee. Three months later, her body was found in a shallow grave only a few hundred yards from where she was last seen.

Incredible "possible" way events could've happened
Revisado: 09-26-20
I loved the fictional telling of the the unknown truth because no one really knows.
if you are from Western North Carolina and a folk of bluegrass music fan then you have heard Doc Watson do the Rodney Dillard song Tom Dooley. If you are a history buff you have read the sparce known facts of the actual case. The way this book brings back the times and struggles of my ancestors made the story that much more interesting. As a someone who can trace his family tree in the area to before 1800 in the Watauga community I recommend this to any true Hillbilly.
