Wonderful Dog Stories
Revisado: 02-20-25
I’m a dog owner of a wonderful rescue. She’s a Heinz 57 mixture we’ve owned for six years. We think she is ten years old as the vet determined she was four years old when we got her. This is our story; however, there are many stories like ours and better published in this book I highly recommend.

Historia
Pico Iyer has made more than one hundred retreats over the past three decades to a small Benedictine hermitage high above the sea in Big Sur, California. He’s not a Christian—or a member of any religious group—but his life has been transformed by these periods of time spent in silence. That silence reminds him of what is essential and awakens a joy that nothing can efface. It’s not just freedom from distraction and noise and rush: it’s a reminder of some deeper truths he misplaced along the way. In Aflame, Iyer connects with inner stillness and joy in his many seasons at the monastery.

The title is misleading. The book doesn't explore "silence" but only talks about being on tge periphery of monasteries.

Lessons for a community suffering from fires
Revisado: 01-18-25
The life lessons one can learn from suffering through a fire and losing material items that were meaningful. The author demonstrated doing this with grace. Very timely in light of the fires in SOCAL. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
From an early age, Margaret Fuller provoked and dazzled New England’s intellectual elite. Her famous Conversations changed women’s sense of how they could think and live; her editorship of the Transcendentalist literary journal the Dial shaped American Romanticism. Now, Megan Marshall, whose acclaimed The Peabody Sisters "discovered" three fascinating women, has done it again: No biography of Fuller has made her ideas so alive or her life so moving.

Margaret Fuller Biography
Revisado: 01-17-25
The author describes the life of Margaret Fuller who could be said to be a feminist/journalist. Her father prepared her for her career. He was a taskmaster making her study for many hours in a day. When he passed away of cholera, responsibility for her family fell to her. She worked for Horace Greeley at the New York Tribune. She also worked for Ralph Waldo Emerson at The Dial, a transcendentalist journal. Then The Tribune sent Margaret to Europe—-specifically England and Italy. There she met her boyfriend/husband (history is not certain that Giovanni Angelo Ossoli was Margaret’s husband). They lived together in Florence, Italy and had a son. Then in 1850, the three boarded the ship, Elizabeth to New York. There was an accident involving the ship hitting a sandbar near Fire Island outside of New York and the three of them died. Margaret accomplished a great deal as a journalist and editor in her short life which thankfully is documented by various people. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
In 1972, New York Representative Shirley Chisholm broke the ice in American politics when she became the first Black woman to run for president of the United States. Chisholm left behind a coalition-building model personified by a once-in-an-era Hollywood party hosted by legendary actress and singer Diahann Carroll, and attended by the likes of Huey P. Newton, Barbara Lee, Berry Gordy, David Frost, Flip Wilson, Goldie Hawn and others. In A More Perfect Party, MSNBC political analyst Juanita Tolliver presents a path to people-centered politics through the lens of this soiree.

Shirley Chisholm and Diahann Carroll
Revisado: 01-15-25
Great book about two African Americans who made their marks in history—-one ran for President of the United States while the other was a well recognized actress. The two of them supported Shirley Chisholm’s run for President. Even though Shirley Chisholm wasn’t elected President, she had been helped by the African American community in her run by such people as Flip Wilson and Harry Belafonte. In 1972. Well written and read by the author, I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Billionaire oligarchs want to own our republic, and they’re nearly there, thanks to legislation and Supreme Court decisions that they have essentially bought. They put Trump and his political allies into office and support a vast network of think tanks, publications, and social media that every day push our nation closer and closer to police-state tyranny.

American Oligarchy
Revisado: 01-13-25
I always associated oligarchy with Russia, not the USA. Unfortunately it’s alive and well in the United States. Trump displayed it during his first term and as he begins his second term it’s on full display again. He’s even created the department of government efficiency for oligarchs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to cut/slash government spending. They all know next to nothing about how our government runs. As oligarchs they support the GOP platform of tax cuts, smaller government, decreased regulations. Interesting that history repeats itself. What we need to overcome this set back is a resistance movement. Otherwise the oligarchs who’ve been playing the long game will once again destroy the middle class and impoverish even more the poor. We shall see…

Now listen to an audio version of one of the most talked about government documents in history. These are the redacted findings of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team, which was tasked with investigating Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections, including exploring any links or coordination between President Donald J. Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government.

Revisado: 01-12-25
Comprehensive document on the Trump Campaign with Russian interference/collaboration to help Trump win the 2016 Presidency. It was shameful what Bill Barr did when he announced that the Trump campaign did nothing wrong and that there were no points of collaboration. This was a lie that duped the American public. Unconscionable. It’s obvious that NONE of these people especially Trump should ever be allowed near the levers of government again!

Historia
Young, brazen, beautiful, and unapologetically brilliant, Margaret Fuller accepts an invitation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the celebrated Sage of Concord, to meet his coterie of enlightened friends. There she becomes “the radiant genius and fiery heart” of the Transcendentalists, a role model to a young Louisa May Alcott, an inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne and the scandalous Scarlet Letter, a friend to Henry David Thoreau as he ventures out to Walden Pond . . . and a muse to Emerson. But Margaret craves more than poetry and interpersonal drama.

Margaret Fuller Transcendentalist
Revisado: 01-02-25
Excellent book about Margaret Fuller and her friends of those times. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody were her friends and participants in the Transcendental movement. Margaret endured many hardships during her short life but she left her mark on history. Her death was such a tragedy as she was about to embark on the next chapter in her life. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Grover Cleveland’s political career—a dizzying journey that saw him rise from obscure lawyer to president of the United States in just three years—was marked by contradictions. A politician of uncharacteristic honesty and principle, he was nevertheless dogged by secrets from his personal life. A believer in limited government, he pushed presidential power to its limits to combat a crippling depression, suppress labor unrest, and resist the forces of American imperialism.

President Grover Cleveland
Revisado: 12-23-24
Terrific book detailing the life of our 22nd and 24th President. It is interesting that he was the first President to serve to non-consecutive terms. Now the people elected Donald Trump as President who will also serve two non-consecutive terms. Cleveland had many challenges during his campaigns as well as his presidencies. The book demonstrates that history repeats itself. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
As one of a handful of journalists allowed in the courtroom, for 23 days Jonathan Alter sat just feet away from the most dangerous threat to democracy in American history, watching the spectacle of the century: the felony trial of Donald Trump. Highly publicized but untelevised and thus largely hidden from public view, this landmark trial offered hope of real justice amid a grueling eight-year national ordeal and foreshadowed the drama of the 2024 presidential election.

America’s Reckoning 2024
Revisado: 12-20-24
Well written book documenting the historical trial of the USA President who won the 2024 election making him the second President to serve two non-consecutive terms of office. His trial brought about his felony conviction but because he is elected President, sentencing is delayed. Who knows what our future holds but it looks to be a bumpy 4 years! Highly recommend this book!
