Don't relate to the negative reviews here

Hummm... don't relate to the first two negative reviews here at all and was supposed so thought I'd say so. Narration seemed fine to me (and I'm someone who previously has given poor reviews for that). And I have no idea what these people are talking about about hating conservatives and the south. Didn't pic up on that at all from the book (I'm moderate).

Sorry this isn't more informative, but that's the reason why It's getting 2 stars from me. Because it seemed to lack the content, or maybe the delivery, to even explain why I thought it was boring. I'm a musician so I'm always looking to listen to artists audio books. Last one I listened to was Timbalands, which was good, and have listened to countless others across all genres. This one I kept having to rewind EVERY single time I started it again only to find I couldn't pay attention. I don't know man, just not impressed at all.

I feel like this was done as a joke or some dare “ hey, bet I can read entries from a rhyming dictionary for an hour and sell it as an audiobook?” This is certainly no “step-by-step” “system” for “mastering” anything... I can’t believe they had the audacity to even assign such a statement to this nonsense of an audiobook. Go to one of the many rhyming dictionary websites and start putting in words and reading it yourself.

This certainly isn’t a musicians map, as it’s not for musicians and it is no map. This isn’t even a beginner book… It’s an introductory book for someone who is considering becoming a beginner... Leave this one alone unless you like pearls of wisdom like saying you should pick an instrument that speaks to you, where then it’s clarified instruments really can’t speak, and that you should pick one that you like the sound of! Thanks for the tip. I also like the one following this where are you should listen to music to decide what genre you like, but also listen to music you don’t like, then making some statement like perhaps you can comment to someone that does like that particular genre how you appreciate something about it and maybe they will do you some musical favor for you one day when you are ready to step out and become a professional. Who are you writing this for? The person that needs to be told how to listen to music and that they should like their instrument they are going to decide to play but also is networking at a professional level? This is a four hour book that can be listen to on double the speed, which I did because I knew I was wasting my time, yet in the amount of time it’s as if he’s trying to make it for everyone and everybody from a 10-year-old to someone who’s put years of work in with a legit chance of making a living in music. It’s absurd.

I don't know if it's that I'm a naturally good "interrogator", but most of this seems like common sense. I mean this is how I naturally find out things in relationships, especially when you think the person has a reason to hide the truth. You remain calm and sympathetic, you don't let it seem like the answer to the question would be upsetting or bother you. Maybe even act like your just curious. You make it seem like the impact of their answer wouldn't have negative consequences, etc etc. I don't know... I just got the book because after 13 years in a difficult relationship, where it ended 6 months ago and now things sort have picked up again, I had some lingering questions (with good reason to ask those questions) which I may have ignored before. So I just recently found out about her infidelities from lines of questioning like this, then I got the book wondering what it would be about, seeing as it was so recent and if I discovered there was more I wanted to know. And after listening for 4 hours I find that everything that's been said I already have done and always have done when screening potential matches. (The problem here was I ignored things I shouldn't have and didn't want to ask the questions in the beginning for the big things like loyalty, but found out plenty of other things that should have been enough to end it as well. Now years later I'm using what seems to be the same common sense practices to find out the whole story. Should have went with my gut 13 years ago and just dealt with it.)

So yea, about the book, I'm just not impressed. Haven't got a thing from it. Came on here to exchange my credit. But I guess that also means that these things do work for those who this line of thought isn't natural to them, and perhaps let the emotions show too much changing what response you will get. So it's good, just not for me.

From a traditional songwriter's perspective...

If you're not into production, this won't be as useful. At least that's what I found. I'm not some old timer either, but I do write on guitar. I do extreme basic recording, although have experienced with the bells and whistles. As the author (eventually) says himself late in the first half of the book, he feels modern songwriters should be decent at producing too. And since this is how he feels, he obviously also feels producing can be songwriting (deserving songwriting credit), as he gives examples of "songwriting" that are all production examples... which I realize is an (unfortunate) occurrence of the songwriter age we're living in further leaving songwriters with less and less of a sliver of the pie. Maybe this is a 5-star book for the songwriters who prefer electronic music or the traditional songwriters who are also (separately) competent in production. It wasn't for me. Nothing new. Providing a new metaphor by comparing songwriting to addiction isn't some insightful idea.

I am going to have to give this a second listen, because I just completed this audiobook and I am completely baffled how anyone would find this to contain helpful information as a songwriter starting out in the industry. I mean I bookmarked one small section about halfway through and that was it. To me this book was more of a loose biography with some general pieces of advice which weren't even that industry specific. That was it. The author certainly didn't try to educate the reader in any of the many areas a songwriter encounters in this industry. I'm trying to think of what audience this book would be good for and I don't know. I honestly can't think of who would benefit, the only recommendation I would give this book to would be those who are looking to work with the author, a songwriter – publisher relationship with her publishing company. And obviously that's not very many people. Don't waste your time/money on this, highly disappointed.
