Terrifying. Engrossing. Beautifully told w multiple POV.

A flawless debut. I listened to the audiobook & my kids were addicted to this story- begged to hear the next chapter and if I listened without them I had to give a summary of what they missed. They wanted to hear more from Cecelia and get closure for her. I agreed!

Historia
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

Revisado: 01-11-25
I have MA in creative writing and teach English so I read constantly and love a great thriller. However, as I am also the mom of four small children, I rarely take the time to write a review but F-it: this book demanded one! As I read, the following words came to mind: haunting, honest, uncomfortable, beautiful, fragile, rage, resilient, underestimated. God- I just loved this book.

Wow: a brilliant twist that could, without such a skilled author, flopped!
Revisado: 12-20-24
Brilliantly & unique. It is understandably tough to make an often oversaturated “topic?!” feel fresh and (can’t spoil this one!) believable. But this novel manages it! This is a sharp and beautifully-crafted story that makes the reader consider all things beyond science and reason. And this story read by Imogen Church? The queen and king of all audio!!! She is my absolute favorite character in every novel (and you never for a second feel she is reading- she’s IN IT!) Love her!

Historia
When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them.

Historia
From the moment Lucy met her husband's mother, Diana, she was kept at arm's length. Diana was exquisitely polite and properly friendly, but Lucy knew she was not what Diana envisioned. That was five years ago. Now, Diana is dead, a suicide note found near her body. Diana claims she no longer wanted to live because of a battle with cancer. But the autopsy finds no cancer. The autopsy does find traces of poison and evidence of suffocation.

Anyone with a Mother-In-Law should read this…
Revisado: 06-17-24
While this wasn’t my favorite Hepworth novel, it was still a fantastic read! It was a good reminder why we shouldn’t jump to conclusions and assume we know people based upon our own life experiences. It was a sad reminder of how damaging infertility can be to a woman… but also how struggles can make one stronger.

Historia
Stephen Aston is getting married again. The only problem is, he's still married to his first wife, even though she is in a care facility for dementia. But he'll take care of that easily, by divorcing her—even if his adult daughters protest. Tully and Rachel Aston look upon Heather as nothing but an interloper. Heather is the same age as Rachel and even younger than Tully. Clearly she's a gold digger and after their father's money. Heather has secrets that she's keeping close, and reasons of her own for wanting to marry Stephen.

Gothic, atmospheric, and filled with complex & intense characters: this novel begins like Jane Eyre and ends like… well, I don’t want to spoil it for you. Needless to say, as usual, S. Halls is INCREDIBLE! It’s rare that I can’t say which was better: the beauty of her writing, the characterization of her protagonist, or the intense plot that manages to move slowly yet keep you 1000% engaged at all times! I always love Ruth Ware & Church: Magic!
Revisado: 06-07-24
I devoured this novel like a binge of “Survivor!” I like some other Ware novels more (like “It Girl”) but every Imogen Church novel is an immediate 5/5, for me. I wished for a bit more complexity and internal struggle from the protagonist (she seemed a little one-dimensional, as did some of the other female characters) but I appreciated the sisterhood that developed between the female characters; very timely. I guess I was waiting for more “Lord of the Flies”… (that could say more about ME than the novel!) 🤣
