He really holds Americans in contempt

I couldn’t get through this book because of the chronic digs, snide remarks, and utter contempt he expressed towards Americans. The irony is that he ended up marrying an American. It’s also odd that he doesn’t hold the French in contempt yet that is where his mother lost her life, not in America.

Great story, lousy narrator

This is a riveting page-turner. The downside is the narrator, who must be someone's friend or relative because I can't imagine why else she was chosen. Most narrators today can do different voices so that you can quickly figure out who is saying what. This narrator can't do that. All the characters sound exactly the same, so it is often difficult to keep track of which character is speaking.

Excellent recommendations for improving diet and health. The drawback is that he subscribes to the now-discredited belief that the ONLY cause of overweight is overeating relative to one's exercise level. The reason he (and many others) believe this is that obesity is associated with several comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke, so it is assumed that obesity CAUSES these diseases. After all, obesity is plainly obvious in people who suffer from these diseases. But that's a little like saying that rashes cause shortness of breath, swelling of the tongue and face, and heart arrhythmia because these comorbidities occur with rashes. We know that's silly because it is an underlying allergy (such as peanuts) that causes rashes along with these other symptoms. Modern research into obesity is showing the same thing. Insulin resistance and inflammation are the most common causes of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. Lowering those two factors reverses all of these. Yes, dietary changes can beneficially impact insulin resistance and inflammation, but some people's genetic makeup makes them more prone to developing them--even when they eat properly and get the recommended level of exercise. As a result, they need medical interventions to keep their baseline insulin and inflammation levels low.

The characters are boring as well as despicable. Whiny Millennial writer, truly screwed up older writer and her messed up family. At one point, the older writer scolds women for not thinking about the man's point of view when they dress for a party, as in, how easy is it to get to your vagina if he decides he wants to f*k you in the bathroom? And this drivel is a NYT best seller. Tells you everything you need to know about who's reading books these days.

A self-absorbed woman and her self-absorbed family

Mercy is the main character--a self-absorbed, complacent, manipulative middle-aged woman married to a clueless husband with three grown selfish, whining children. Her life is mundane, which doesn't prevent her from manipulating and deceiving people on a daily basis. Her self-absorbed character is revealed with heightened clarity in her treatment of her elderly landlord's cat, He and his wife must move to Richmond to care for their grandson and their dying daughter. He asks Mercy to take Desmond in, and she does for a while. When it turns out he needs to give him up permanently, she agrees to take him, then promptly scoops him up, shoves him into his carrier, and dumps him at an animal shelter. The cat didn't even protest when she threw him in his carrier and handed him over to the animal shelter because he trusted her. When she gets home, she gathers up all of his food, bowls, etc and summarily dumps them in the trash. It is a deceptive act of cruelty both to Desmond's elderly owner (who believed he left the cat with someone trustworthy who would care for him) and to the cat who, as she herself admits, was absolutely no trouble at all. I stopped reading the book at this point because I couldn't care less what happens to her and her self-absorbed family.

Blaming parents for being flawed

If you like stories about "inept' parents who somehow totally screw up their kids despite loving them, then this is a book for you. It's amazing that the vast majority of kids survive at all given our culture's blame-and-shame attitude toward parents. You see, parents are flawed human beings who are doing the best they can and frequently get it just right, No, no, they are inept fools who somehow still manage to keep a roof over their kids' heads and food on the table. A real conundrum. When the kids grow up and "realize" how much their parents failed them, well then, the logical thing to do is to estrange themselves from their "toxic, inept, intrusive" parents. Better to carve your family up into little warring factions rather than seek to understand, to appreciate, and to forgive.

Unlikable characters, unbelievable plot

Not Patterson's best by a long shot. The President has an affair, and plans to divorce the First Lady and marry his mistress. His chief of staff decides the best way to handle the situation is to have the First Lady assassinated. That is supposed to make voters feel sorry for the President, rather than raising suspicion that the President took out a contract on the First Lady to clear the way for him to marry his mistress. Seriously. That's the plot. None of the characters in this story are likable or believable. A lot of two-dimensional bad guys and good guys, lots of gloating on the part of good guys when they win one.

Narrator is not Grover Gardner

What were they thinking of getting this narrator to voice these beloved characters? Grover Gardner is the voice of Any Carpenter, Laurie Collins, Marcus, Vince, and Pete. This narrator is nothing short of awful in that regard, but also has a voice that is much too young for a retired cop. But the story is great.
