I'm here for Chaol
Revisado: 03-25-25
We follow Celaena from the prison mines of Endovier to the Glass Castle where she must fight other cut-throats to win her freedom and become Champion of the King. I love Chaol Westfall. He is a grumpy guy, but I just know that Celaena is going to fall for this man. I'm sure everyone is head-over-heels for Dorian but at this stage, he is just meh. Nehemia is also my fav bestie. I love how she is pulling off her "role" at the Glas Castle. I feel like Nox was a super underrated character in TOG, I really liked what little we saw of him and hope we see him in future books. I do feel like the competition was weirdly set up, and not enough went into the details until the final test. I've also turned Maas' overuse of the word 'particularly' into a drinking game at this point. Aside from those two grips, I genuinely enjoyed this book and am looking forward to seeing what comes next for Celaena.

I am Celaena Sardothien and I will not be afraid!
Revisado: 03-19-25
TOG has been on my TBR for a while now so I decided to finally dive in by starting with the series' prequel which is comprised of some short stories that follow Celaena Sardothien's life before Endovier and the Glass Castle. It did not take long for me to absolutely love Celaena's character. All that sass! I really enjoyed seeing her grow as a character in Assassin's Blade and can't wait to see her continue to grow. And of course, in true Maas fashion - my heart was ripped out by the end of the novel so naturally I will be starting TOG tonight!

Not the best, not the worst.
Revisado: 03-03-25
Cathrall definitely creates a vivid seascape world that is very different from most fantasies I've read. I enjoyed the historical rhetoric, I often wish we still communicated so eloquently. I can understand how some readers did not like the way this particular story was written since everything is learned through character correspondences. This fact did make it a bit slower to read and sometimes harder to grasp things, but ultimately, I found that I enjoyed how uniquely it was written. I am looking forward to the second book so that I can find out what happens in this duology. I wouldn't say that we were left with a cliffhanger at the end. Rather, I would say that this book was a primer for what is to come.

Lost Tales
Revisado: 02-23-25
The Emily Wilde series is such a comfy read. The dynamic between Wilde and Bambleby is amusing to me. I'm here for the snark from Shadow, Orga, Lord Taran, and Snowbell, to be honest. I think this was a good end to Wilde's adventures with the tear-jerking happy ending as customary is "comfy" reads. I did like the message that all stories hold power, I've personally always felt that to be true. I also liked that she touched on the deeper message that life is doomed to repeat itself unless the tell-tale story is shattered and rewritten.

"For even dead, I will not die. I am the shepherd of shadow. The phantom of the fright. The demon in the daydream. The nightmare in the night.”
The Shepherd King will be living rent-free in my head for the rest of my life. This duology is perfection. The mix of poetic verse coupled with the Gothic fairytale vibe just does it for me. I listened to the audiobook, which I wholeheartedly recommend, Lisa Cordileone does a great job voicing the characters, and her masterful sound effects just add to the ambiance. I could do a full book breakdown, but honestly, all you really need to do is drive to the bookstore, target, or wherever and buy this duology. You're welcome.

Genre: emotional trauma with a side of whiplash
Revisado: 02-14-25
The emotional whiplash that I am still processing after just finishing Onyx Storm is insane. I debated 2 stars but honestly, in my heart I know I'm just annoyed because of the ending. Yarros gave a whole knew meaning to cliffhanger. She basically strings you along on quests which seem rushed, provides half answers for the massive number of questions popping up throughout the plot, then ends after a pivotal battle by tossing a bunch of partially explained occurrences fogged over due to erasing the FMC's memories. You didn't leave me hanging on a cliff Yarros, you pushed me off the damn mountain without a dragon to catch me!
I did enjoy the book overall, but I guess I was hoping for more substance. My three highlights were when Xaden was mistaken for Dain on Deverelli (freaking hilariously awkward), Broccoli (simply because of how random it was), and Ridoc's undying comedic relief. My biggest question is, why did you make the Irids so 'sus'? What are they hiding? I find it hard to believe they are pacifist dragons...

I'm here for Carrion!
Revisado: 01-13-25
I felt like it was a slow start, but once the world building was mostly squared away, the pace picked up. I definitely get the hype over Kingfisher, but Carrion was my favorite - I love the comedic relief he provided throughout.
Talk about a slew of plot twists! Hart definitely keeps us on our toes. Can't wait for the second book to see how Saeris adapts to her new...roles.
I would've given 5 stars, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the female narrator of the audiobook adaptation. Her tone gave the impression that Saeris was in a constant state of distress, which was a little annoying. The male narrator, 10 out of 10

I wanted to give it four but part two was just eh
Revisado: 11-20-24
Sorry in advance for the long review. I feel as though I am at a disadvantage to many readers as this is my first Kristen Hannah book. Though I have many of her previous books on my TBR, this one jumped out to me because it was about the Vietnam War. I was excited since the vast majority of Historical Fictions center around other wars, most notably WWI or WWII. I’ve met several Vietnam Vets through my previous career so finding a book focused on the nurses seemed even more intriguing.
Part One was extremely readable and I sped through the first 20 chapters in a day (via Audible). Keeping an open mind since it is indeed Historical FICTION, I found the first half enjoyable and liked the details and imagery depicted while Frankie was “In Country”. I know that some readers were … distressed by some of the imagery portrayed by but I am inclined to disagree with those particular views. War is war and horrifying things occur on or near battle grounds. Including some of the more gruesome details not only shed light on this simple fact but painted a vivid picture of how horrible war can be at times. War rarely stays on the designated field of battle so it is only pertinent that the afflicted and affected villagers – men, women, children, and unfortunately, babies- be included in a book about war. Do I personally like it, no, does it make the book feel more “real”, yes.
Part Two was a struggle for me. It felt like a broken record. The never-ending tragedy and drama was just a bit over the top. Also, it really made Frankie seem like she couldn’t function without a man in her sheets. I started to lose all respect for her. I don’t know many women, if any, that would be so self-sabotaging….in the name of “love”. I didn’t think I was going to finish. I know a lot of people with PTSD and they can face some difficult times but never have I met one that was pathetic. It was a constant eye-roll. If Hannah should have left all attempts at romance out of this book after Frankie’s “bond” with Jamie. It felt like Hannah was trying to paint all military men and liars and cheats to be honest.
The last two chapters in Part Two were the only part of the second half that I enjoyed. The rest was just unnecessary dramatic fluff.

I put off reading this book because it's classed as a "romantacy". Though I enjoy epic fantasy, I've never been big on romance. But I honestly fell in love with this world and it's characters. I even teared up in certain parts. The hate I felt for Amarantha...let's just say, if I were in Feyre's shoes, my cashe of slanders would have gotten me killed pretty early on. I am excited to see what book two will bring.

Though Gooley offers a wealth of information that I find interesting, the chosen narrator of his audio book made me feel like I was in 10th grade economics class craving the bell to set me free. I believe I will stick to physically reading the remainder of Gooley's books. Perhaps I will edit my review when I decide to read my physical copy of this book, but until then, I'm afraid Jeff Harding ruined my experience.
