Historia
An instant best seller that is poised to become a classic, Moonwalking with Einstein recounts Joshua Foer's yearlong quest to improve his memory under the tutelage of top "mental athletes". He draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of remembering, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human memory. From the United States Memory Championship to deep within the author's own mind, this is an electrifying work of journalism that reminds us that, in every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.

Entertaining and interesting
Revisado: 05-01-20
Joshua Foer, a journalist, launched himself into the world of mental gymnastics with great success, weaving together historical perspectives of memory, current scientific knowledge, and his experiences as a test case in a study of memory-enhancing techniques. I recommend this book!

Encore, encore!
Revisado: 03-14-20
This book was fun to listen to. As a non-fiction reader, I had never read anything by Dean Koontz, although I have seen the on bookshelves, prominently displayed in store windows and on the first table at the entry point. Nothing against him as a writer-I have read few best sellers in the fiction category over the years! But Audible is a medium that has opened the genre to me! And I am grateful to my sister for sharing this book with me! Great characters, universal themes, and an awesome dog—pretty hard to beat, and definitely hard to shut off when I needed to sleep, or do something else important!

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Moving story of love, honor, human weaknesses and abuses of power
Revisado: 03-11-20
The author has done an excellent job of creating space for citizens of Ancient Greece to live and breathe again in the hearts and minds of readers who seek to better understand the characters described in ancient texts. Frazer Douglas has done a fine job voicing the characters and enhancing dramatic tension. I will listen to this book again.

Historia
Less than 250,000 people live in the Northern Territory, an area more than twice the size of Texas. If you want to escape from civilisation, you don’t have to go far. But you can’t outrun the heat. Every year during October and November the sweltering climate can drive people wild; they call it ‘Suicide Season’, ‘Mango Madness’ or, more plainly, ‘The Build-up’. It’s during this blistering heat that Jim O’Connell’s body is found in a creek bed, mummified and with his genitals removed.

One complicated crime story!
Revisado: 03-09-20
The story told is a sorry mess! It reminds me, in some ways, of another such friend vs friend murder story out of Terlingua, Texas, USA. Only, this time, the accused actually served some time.
The challenges of investigative audio journalism show up here, as the listener hears both on the spot testimony of participants and transcripts read by actors. The transitions are handled pretty well, but I do find it difficult to understand some of the ‘live’ recordings. The Aussie accents did take a bit of ear-tuning on my part but the non-professionals voices drop away in natural speech patterns, so listening requires more effort.
This is my second Audible originals true crime investigated journalism book. I had similar issues with the first. It is not a failure on the part of the production crew, the journalist, etc. But I will think a bit more before I get another.

Historia
Unlike the stories of most visible division I college athletes, Amanda Ottaway’s story has more in common with those of the 80 percent of college athletes who are never seen on TV. The Rebounders follows the college career of an average NCAA Division I women’s basketball player in the 21st century. It begins with the recruiting process when Ottaway is an eager, naive teenager and ending when she’s a more contemplative 20-something alumna.

Wanted to listen without stopping!
Revisado: 03-05-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook: it’s a good story, well written, well read, with lots of insight into women’s collegiate sports and the challenges of participating at a small college level. Honestly, I found the issues with the coaching staff shocking, and hoped that the women at my small college (Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, which also had a history of strong men’s basketball teams, transitioning to a coed school in the early 70’s) had more compassionate coaching staffs guiding them!
Andrea Watkins’ performance feels genuine, bringing to life the emotional colors of Amanda Ottaway’s experiences as expressed in the book. I found it hard to turn it off for other demands on my time.

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

A great way to enjoy Dickens!
Revisado: 03-04-20
Dickens comes to life with Armitage’s reading. It is quite an achievement, given the numerous characters and lengthy book! I don’t believe I would have had the patience to read it-wading through the language /diction of the day and taking the time required to look up unfamiliar terms, let alone tackling all the chapters. 🌿 I am primarily a consumer of nonfiction and have neglected classic works of fiction since school. I look forward to remedying this shortcoming, this gap in my education, through audiobooks!

This fascinating story is enhanced by the verbal delivery of Ms Weeks, to the extent that I did not want to stop listening, nor did I want to do other things while I listened! How in keeping with the Greek oral tradition that is! As Circe tells the tale, serving as the bard, the scenery and action is described so clearly that it seemed to take place in the space before my eyes, like a painting created but ever changing. ....I loved it, and will listen again!

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Interesting story that raises many questions
Revisado: 11-22-19
The tribal storyteller, a young man straddling the traditional world of his people and the modern world as we know it, presented an interesting portrait of a man, unsuccessfully straddling those worlds, ultimately being incarcerated for his criminal acts. The questions raised involve tribe beliefs and legends-what is the role of belief in the assessment of mental health, and what constitutes a jury of one’s peers when the justice system is not designed for, and run by, people of the tribal subculture the criminal comes from. I could not stop listening, despite lots of foul language. I would not recommend it to anyone who can’t overlook it-it is too pervasive! But it an interesting story about human frailty set against a backdrop of the rugged and vast landscape of Alaska and its unique cultural challenges.

I was disappointed- for much the same reasons others stated. It was confusing and difficult to follow. I hadn’t read the stor. It left me with bits and pieces of the classic tale, not held together by a story line.
