Historia
Early in her career, Elaine Pagels changed our understanding of the origins of Christianity with her work in The Gnostic Gospels. Now, in the culmination of a decades-long career, she explores the biggest subject of all, Jesus. In Miracles and Wonder she sets out to discover how a poor young Jewish man inspired a religion that shaped the world.

An insightful read into Jesus Christ
Revisado: 04-10-25
This really opened my eyes to the world that surrounded Jesus. This made Jesus more human relatable rather than the washed version of Jesus always wearing white robes and having a soft voice like the white Michael Jackson. Jesus wasn’t just some untouchable spirit in human form. Jesus really came and experienced what it was like to be human. The world around him influenced how he taught and how he died. I once thought the cross was reserved for Jesus only. If Jesus was born in the 1700s or 1800s, he’d probably be hanged or killed by gun fire. Which makes me question if we should wear crosses. If Jesus died by the gun would we be wearing gun necklaces?

Most Intriguing Horror Novel of 2024
Revisado: 11-15-24
I thought this was going to be a paranormal fright that was perfect for Halloween, but it's so much more. Yes the novel is scary, not only because of the paranormal activity but because of the relatability. Being afraid that a man in a mask is going to chase me around town with a matchit is not all that scary. But knowing that keeping lies from my child and turn them cold hearted is really scary. This wasn't about a haunted ghost. It was about the darkness that we can enter with the choices we make. It especially hit home since I have a little girl.

All About the Representation
Revisado: 09-04-24
For a couple of years I only had one true crime podcast I listened to and now SIstas Who Kill is my second true crime podcast. As a Black man, I noticed how underrepresented Black killers and Black victims are reported in true crime. So I'm glad to have came upon this podcast to see the violence that Black people go through and that certain crimes are actually not a "white people thing." Don't let the rap music fool you, Black people do more than just shoot each other.

Hannah and her friends were just having a bit of fun when they decided to play a game to communicate with spirits of the dead. Little did they know something would answer their call and crawl its way into the pages of Hannah’s journal. What started out as a game has turned into something much more evil. With dire, horrifying consequences. Is there any way to escape the curse?

Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

White means Death
Revisado: 04-30-24
What I got most out of this story is that all the people that the Europeans visited were content. They were not plagued by the social status and materialism that the Europeans lived by. This explains why Americans today are knee deep in credit card debt and go broke after making millions of dollars because we have developed a desire to have more than the next guy. Some of the indians the Europeans encountered were content by living off of nothing but water. They had no knowledge of the guns, and diseases that the Europeans brought. And they were not so ashamed of nudity like the Europeans were. When we criticize Black women for twerking, we get this mindset from Europeans and their church.

Historia
Millions of people–looking to cheat on their partners–signed up for Ashley Madison in the early 2000s, seeking a private space to share their public desires. The promise of discretion was shattered in the summer of 2015, when anonymous hackers stole the company’s cache of user information and published it worldwide. The result? One of the most shocking data breaches of the internet age. Overnight, millions of unfaithful spouses had their real names, addresses and sexual preferences published online in a searchable database that anyone could browse.

I was a single 24 year old in 2015 so I knew of Ashley Maddison but I paid it no attention. But as a married man I appreciate hearing stories of infidelity and knowing that it’s not worth the risk. Even if I got five years without sex.

Whoa

This is my first story by Fernanda Melchor and I'm quite impressed. There is no dialogue. Just very aggressive descriptions. A nice break from writers who write in poetic language.

Revisado: 07-18-23
I don’t regret waiting this long to read Harry Potter because the life lessons reflect deeper than if I had read it as a child such as “the choices we make show who we are far more than our abilities.”

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

First time reading Harry Potter at 32.
Revisado: 07-09-23
I must say that Harry Potter was most famous for my generation but I never paid the story attention. Now that audible made the first book in the series free for a limited time I figured there’s no better time to start than now. I really enjoyed this story as an adult given the fact it was written for a children’s audience.
