After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well. But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? Fantastic characters, wry humor and action
Revisado: 07-28-23
This is a new favorite book. It’s like a gigantic puzzle in construction as you figure out what’s going on with an unreliable narrator. It makes rereading almost more rewarding than the first read. Kai is a compelling main character with a strong voice. The audible narrator is wonderful. Like all of Martha Wells, there’s a lot of found family, dark humor, and gender-trope-subversion.

Historia
Fie abides by one rule: Look after your own. Her Crow caste of undertakers and mercy-killers takes more abuse than coin, but when they’re called to collect royal dead, she’s hoping they’ll find the payout of a lifetime. When Crown Prince Jasimir turns out to have faked his death, Fie’s ready to cut her losses - and perhaps his throat. But he offers a wager that she can’t refuse: Protect him from a ruthless queen, and he’ll protect the Crows when he reigns.

Compelling story, bad narrator
Revisado: 05-22-21
The world felt real and compelling, and the book was well-written. The world-building has holes you can drive a wagon through but somehow I liked the main character enough to enjoy the story regardless. The narrator was terrible. The ends of all the sentences went down in intonation and often had the last word totally distinct like “What do you think. Pa.” The narrator also chose a strange British accent for the characters, which there was no reason for as far as I could tell. At least for the most part the book felt like it took place somewhere hot and dry; I had assumed a more Western feel.

Innovative and rich story
Revisado: 12-25-18
A fantasy book about a winter king and how a group of women overcome their assigned roles and defeat evil. Really well written, very rich themes. Narrator is good although Russian ish accent isn’t.

Couldn't handle narrator
Revisado: 11-03-17
It's quite possible this book deserves more stars but the narrator makes it extremely tough for me to listen. I spent the first third of the book wondering if this was being read by a robot. It's not - you can tell because he does the female character with an extremely fake British accent.
