Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Published in Oct 1989, not 2020 or 2023!
Revisado: 06-09-24
Grrrr.
I like Nora Roberts’ books a lot. HOWEVER, I don’t like her older books much and get very frustrated when Audible/Amazon list publication dates for a reprint or audio release without acknowledging the originally publish date. This means I usually check her website for this information. However, I was in a hurry and only checked Amazon for the print publication date, which was misleading (2020!), so I didn’t realize the age of this book until the lead male character fired up a cigarette inside his employer’s inn. Then there was the moment he needed to make a clandestine phone call and he walked to the nearest pay phone. These elements were very jarring when I thought the book was recent. Also, the relationship dynamics were very 1980s era, which I don’t care for.
The narrator was ok but I couldn’t get past the age of the story. Fool me once, shame on you. Audible has now fooled me twice with their publication date habits, so I need a time out from them. This will be a DNF for me and it’ll be a while before I purchase another Nora Roberts book.

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

The highly anticipated follow-up to William R. It’s a No For Me, DNF
Revisado: 06-17-23
There’s no wonder (as in magic & mystery) in this title and there’s no wonder it feels like the 1990s. I trusted Audible instead of going online to research this title’s details. I know better than that, so shame on me. The Audible page contains some of the title details, including the publication date: 12/25/18. However, (I really feel this should be all caps…HOWEVER), the hardcover was published in 1998, 20 years earlier than what Audible shows. Technically, yes, the audio book was published in 2018 but that does not make it feel like it was written in 2018. From the perspective of 2023, I rate it a big Did Not Finish.
I love fiction, including mystery and romance but I could not finish this book. The antihero and the heroine were both cliched and the serial killer trope was reminiscent of the overwrought serial killers of the last century… think Silence of the Lambs, where serial killers are ultra vindictive and smarter than everyone else. The heroine is a battered wife turning to the hero for help and he’s rubbing his shirtless body all over her while he teaches her to shoot a gun? That’s a no for me, thankyouverymuch.
The plot and the characters were enough to put me off all other Lisa Gardner books, but I’d listen to the narrator again.

Historia
Sonny Lofthus is a strangely charismatic and complacent young man. Sonny’s been in prison for a dozen years, nearly half his life. The inmates who seek out his uncanny abilities to soothe leave his cell feeling absolved. They don’t know or care that Sonny has a serious heroin habit - or where or how he gets his uninterrupted supply of the drug. Or that he’s serving time for other peoples’ crimes. Sonny took the first steps toward addiction when his father took his own life rather than face exposure as a corrupt cop. Now Sonny is the seemingly malleable center of a whole infrastructure of corruption....

DNF for me
Revisado: 11-04-19
Might be my style and story preference but this just didn’t engage me, DNF. The characters were awkwardly voiced imo, so I kept think about the narration quality instead of the story.
