Historia
Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the hard years following World War Two. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Eilis in America, she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, who loves the Dodgers and his big Italian family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future.

Historia
Eilis Lacey is Irish, married to Tony Fiorello, a plumber and one of four Italian American brothers, all of whom live in neighboring houses on a cul-de-sac in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with their wives and children and Tony’s parents, a huge extended family. It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis is now forty with two teenage children. Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.

Good lord. The stars are for the writing. But agggggggonizingly slow pace. And WTF is with the zero- resolution ending? If I wanted to read a choose-my-own-adventure story and create my own ending, I’d have done so. Do not make me listen for hours and then never tell me what heck happens in the end. I should NOT have to wait for Book 3 to find that out. Grrrrrrr.

Riveting. Intense but manageable and so very human and uplifting. I’m grateful to be educated on this important but overlooked piece of my own history.

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

They each got better as it went along. Glad I stuck it out thru the first two which were 2-3 stars. Definitely worth it for the last two. Very thought provoking.

Historia
London, 1940. After years of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor—well, to themselves, anyway—Ellie McDonnell and her family have turned over a new leaf as they help the government’s war effort. It’s true that the straight-laced Major Ramsey didn’t give them much choice, but Ellie must admit she doesn’t miss breaking and entering as much as she thought. What she does miss is the challenge of unlocking an impossible code and the adrenaline rush from being somewhere she shouldn’t. So when Major Ramsey turns up unannounced with another job, she can’t say no.

This was a fantastic breather from nonfiction heaviness. Good plot. Fun dialogue w usual wry Brit style. Outstandingly performed by just one narrator. If you liked Mary Higgins Clark back in the day, you’ll love it.

Charming, thought provoking, but too long
Revisado: 04-21-22
I ended up glad I stuck it out. But it was a chore often, could/should have been trimmed by 25%. Too much repetitive circular dialog. Chop that, and more plot could have unfolded. The performance however is truly outstanding. So many voices adeptly done so not confusing. Don’t think I’ll read more by the author though.

Historia
In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

Timely; moving; but…..
Revisado: 02-24-22
First, this is hands down best performance in my long Audible experience. She did different voices seamlessly and convincingly. I liked the story, particularly reading during covid, but I wish there were many fewer pages of birthing/nursing detail in exchange for more development of the human journeys. We would have loved to know what happened in the next months or years even. It felt unfinished to me.

Historia
Dating back to slavery, Edgefield County, South Carolina - a place "easy to pass by on the way somewhere else" - has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place, listeners meet these extraordinary people, including Drew himself, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight, however, he begins to ask what it means to be "the rare bird, the oddity".

Historia
Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, Betty Carpenter is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit in the rural town of Breathed, Ohio, is one of poverty and violence—both from outside the family and, devastatingly, from within. But despite the hardships she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters, and her father’s brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all to which she bears witness, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write.

Worth it, but where was the editor?!
Revisado: 08-18-21
Performance outstanding. Many characters, and she voices them authentically and differently enough that you don’t get lost re who is speaking. Story, actually beautifully written, is compelling, important, authentic, enjoyable…..but where in tarnation was the editor?! Could have had 25% fewer anecdotal segments and still have been equally, if not more, impactful. Glad I read it to learn about being raised in southern Ohio, but had to force myself to be patient with it.

A good break from non fiction
Revisado: 07-14-21
Cute story, albeit predictable. I needed a break from heavy stuff (real life issues) and this is def that. Sadly the performance is trying. Most of the cast struggled w accents and hence sounded rather odd, but the plot survives that. Good palate cleanser overall.
