A lot of bad hands get dealt in Vegas, but E. L. Speare may be holding one of the worst: He's cursed with the need to commit sins, and if he misses his daily quota, there's hell to pay - literally. Fortunately, his hometown affords him plenty of chances to behave badly. But Speare's newest case really has him going out on a limb. The right-hand man of a notorious crime boss has been found dead in a dumpster - minus his right hand, not to mention the rest of his arm.

Intriguing world and protagonist predicament.
Revisado: 02-06-24
I really enjoyed the overall tone of the story and the world building so far. I hope there is more story to unfold even more of this world and the characters and the supernatural beings with in it.
I may not be a writer, but I am a consumer of the written/spoken word. And one trend that I see being ground into urban paranormal is this self flagellating style of character development. Can we stop? Please? These characters can be well developed and be imperfect and even antihero-like without the constant, self loathing and self flagellating, that appears in this book. I can deal with the over-the-top, snarky remarks better than with that. Hint: less snark and more substance please. In an audiobook I feel snark may become overkill very fast.
While this character does not appear as misogynistic as Jim Butcher’s earlier work (why I stopped reading his books after one) why do writers have such a difficult time relating to a strong, female character? Why does she have to come off like a nag just because she is determined, bad assed, and holds the main character accountable for his actions? Ortiz comes off more like a supernatural bully to Vincent than a partner. It’s such a shame as her role could be so much more with less of her written angst.
Anyway I may consider the third book after a long break and if there is a fourth. I love a series and this one has the makings of a long running one in my opinion. I’m cheering for this author to grow this world and its characters.

Amazing and Uncomfortable Storytelling
Revisado: 09-17-23
This is a story well told and in some ways disappointing for this listener but only because I didn’t get the wrapped-in-a-bow resolution I realized that I wanted. Ms Kane kept it real and uncomfortable like life can be. I love this flawed female antihero and her crew!
It is not a disappointing story! I want more! I came to this series late in the game and I hope the newer listeners like myself show the author there is still love for her story and characters.
Of course the voice actor is superb! I look for books based on her and that has brought me to new authors like Stacia Kane.

My least favorite. Hardest to Review.
Revisado: 08-31-23
Worth the credit? You be the judge. If you’re a fan of the series probably yes. If new to the series do not start here!
The performance and mention of a small character from another story got this the additional star. In my opinion this is one character that needed to live a 1000 lives to grow. As an anxiety sufferer I’m happy to say I’ve never faced such severe anxiety. However former story lines had characters live through many more lives to develop to a point of….no spoilers!
Anyway. Firm fans are going to select it anyway as I did. I will always want more. Just don’t begin here if you’re new to the series.

So glad I discovered this Series
Revisado: 07-21-23
I am listening as fast as I can to this series. It is so good! So much depth of story and exciting! Ms Kane knows a flawed protagonist indeed. The story is very powerful in many ways without having to go deep into the details of the trauma riddled lives. But! I am here for it if she does decide to fill in the blanks in her future books.
Ms Turpin is phenomenal as usual. Her vocal talents create a visualization to the authors words. What a great pairing!

Books like these keep me a member
Revisado: 07-18-23
As part of my Audible membership I listened to this book. High story, great world building, unique characters make this book such a great find for me. If anyone in Audible is reading this, know that stories like these that are included in my membership keep me paying monthly.
I want the author to make millions off her books for sure but I’d have not met her otherwise, most likely. Thanks for a new story Ms Kane!
The voice actor is amazing!!! Love her range and inflections. I got caught up at times with the tension of the story just from her inflections and voice acting. Bravo Ms Turpin!!! I now look for books based on who is narrating almost as much as by author.
Diving into the rest of the series now. I’m so excited to have a new reading/listening adventure.

Revisado: 06-09-23
I am a late comer to this series of books. I’ve only been reading them for the last year or so. I am very impressed with the evolution of the storytelling. I love the inclusivity, creativity, and relatability.
The narrator is pretty amazing as well. I love how she makes me “see” the characters and “feel” their words.
I would love to see more about the witches I think they deserve their own series. When I think about individual characters, long after I put the book down, that is something special to me. And after the last couple or stories in this anthology, the witches really stay on my mind.
More Jane of course!!! She is all the things I want to see in a hero. She is evolving. This universe is evolving and I want to be there for every tale. Thank you!

Ok Robin. I’m trusting in Micheal’s Process
Revisado: 08-03-22
Like many the ending took me a back a bit. That doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the story. I am trusting the process of Michaels writing as each new tale of this saga keeps me enthralled on its own. However it is difficult for me to think of it as a stand alone.
At any rate I’m a huge fan! I’ll be here for the next. If this is your entry to Michael J Sullivan and this world he has built, I’m happy for you. You’re in for one fantastic journey, no matter where you start.

Just What I Needed Now
Revisado: 05-30-22
I have tried to read this book before years ago and just couldn’t get through it. It wasn’t because the book was poorly written or the message was not a good message, it was because I wasn’t ready. I say this for those of you who have done the same perhaps the audiobook will be more helpful.
The only minus for the audio in my opinion, was the ringing of the meditation bell. While I definitely appreciate the reason why they had it there, but due to the production quality perhaps? Or my settings? It was very jarring and sharp sounding so if you’re using headphones it would be a lot! I wish that they would go back in and either soften that sound or delete. However for those of you who want to persevere with the audio book in spite of that sound issue I would suggest that you use that sound as an opportunity to be present. As that is usually the reason for the bell. To be present and reflect on the now.
If the audiobook is not for you, I recommend you reading it. I like how it’s broken down in specific chapters where one can return and perhaps just meditate or be with that chapter as needed. I believe this is a book for lifetime and that one or more chapters will always resonate with me.
