Historia
When a prominent Sacramento businessman is killed and his wife injured in a brutal home invasion, Detective Emily Hunter and her partner, Javier Medina, are called to investigate. At first glance, it seems like a crime of opportunity gone horribly wrong, but Emily soon finds there might be more to both the crime and the dead man. The high-stakes investigation also comes at a time when Emily is caring for her mother, who has early-onset Alzheimer's, and Emily struggles to balance her job with her personal life.

Great Start to a New Series!

I really enjoyed the twists and turns in this story, and how the authors pass job experience shines through!
The reader did well differentiating voices, but was generally too monotone.

Disappointing

Probably could have gotten this classic to a 4 if the narrator had been able to keep me engaged, and the abundance of ‘big” words hadn’t become distracting.

Good performance, OK book.
Thankfully I was also reading the Kindle version , or I wouldn’t have known that the critical 3rd-to-last chapter 76 was somehow skipped! Has no one else noticed this in the last12 years?!?

Revisado: 08-03-19
As others have already commented, this reader just doesn’t suit this character. I’m not sure why, but I couldn’t get past that. Story was OK but had too many eye-roll moments. With better narration it might have earned 3 stars.

Historia
Lou Berney's The Long and Faraway Gone is a smart, fiercely compassionate crime story that explores the mysteries of memory and the impact of violence on survivors - and the lengths they will go to find the painful truth of the events that scarred their lives. In the summer of 1986, two tragedies rocked Oklahoma City. Six movie theater employees were killed in an armed robbery while one inexplicably survived. Then a teenage girl vanished from the annual state fair. Neither crime was ever solved.

Amazing Book, 1/2 good readers
Revisado: 04-02-18
First off, this is an amazing book which lived up to the high praise of several author friends, and Lou Berney is indeed a great writer! I alternated between the print and audio versions, and the book alternates between the male & female reader. Brian Hutchison created many good, distinct character voices l. As for Amy McFadden... I’m not sure who in this production thought that a woman with a pronounced and unwavering Michigan accent would be appropriate for characters born and raised in OKC?? I found her voice so irritating that I tried to time it so that I could read Julianna’s chapters in print and listen to Wyatt.

When legendary black ops veteran Colonel Scott “Hort” Horton tracks Rain down in Tokyo, Rain can’t resist the offer: a multi-million dollar payday for the “natural causes” demise of three ultra-high-profile targets who are dangerously close to launching a coup in America. Fresh story, narrator almost up to the hype!
Revisado: 09-19-16
Gr at, fresh story. Em Eldridge did a good job creating unique voices todifferentiate the characters. However, her speech mannerisms can be grating (particularly during certain stretches of a character contemplating), and the producer might want to correct glaring mispronunciations, eg Alpha RO-meo??

She hears Paris. She hears escape. She cannot board the plane fast enough. When she arrives, April quickly learns the apartment is more than just some rich hoarder' s repository. Beneath the dust and cobwebs and stale perfumed air is a literal goldmine - and not just in terms of actual dollars.

Great Story with Unlikeable Protagonist
Revisado: 04-12-16
I really enjoyed the story and way it unfolded, alternating between past and present. However, I found April unlikable , & the reader' snotty, clipped intonation exacerbated that. Te inconsistent French pronunciation (eg "Part Doo, Chapitre Eighteen") and stereotypical supporting characters (overpronouncing Frenchman, teen girls, and surfer brother) had me looking forward to the diary segments.

Solid 2nd entry in The Charlie McNally Series
Revisado: 03-12-16
Hank Phillippi Ryan's novels shine most brightly when she writes the life she knows best. A fast-paced story with well-developed characters, despite a couple of convenient coincidences.
The reader is good, though her breathless delivery makes it hard to hear when the listener isn't in a quiet room.
