Historia
Today I will take you to the starting point of my journey through India, I start on Sagar Island, which is located south of Calcutta in the river delta of the Hoogly River. The river washes the water from the north of the country here into the Bay of Bengal. We will do a short calming breathing exercise that a local yoga teacher showed me. The relaxation exercise is called "Ocean breath" and the music in this episode it is by Yonder Dale. To help your brain get from the active phase to a resting state, the episode is supported by delta and theta waves. The stimulation with theta waves helps ...

Another of Wodehouse's frantic scrambles of characters to amuse us today as he did his fans of the '20s. This story is concerned with the obligation the rich have for the poor and may still feel that they have today.

Historia
Sarah Kurchak is autistic. She hasn’t let that get in the way of pursuing her dream to become a writer, or to find love, but she has let it get in the way of being in the same room with someone chewing food loudly and of cleaning her bathroom sink. In I Overcame My Autism and All I Got Was This Lousy Anxiety Disorder, Kurchak examines the Byzantine steps she took to become “an autistic success story”, how the process almost ruined her life, and how she is now trying to recover.

Unglamorized Autobiographical Writing
Revisado: 06-20-24
I liked the forthright honesty of the author.
I did not like how often she felt compelled to state disclaimers that her experience is not meant to portray the entirety of autism.
As a recently diagnosed (at age 58) autistic female, I was stunned at how much of the author’s experience resonated with me. But I was left thinking that I may steer clear of any ‘autistic community’ because I don’t want to deal with judgmental opinions from a whole new group of people.
I think that the need for shielding herself with numerous disclaimers may be a part of what makes the author herself. And so that was interesting to see and it added to the information of the book: this is what this person feels compelled to say to be good with herself. Did it irritate me? No, not once I realized she was showing, not just telling me how her mind works.
Still, in a future edition of the book, or if she does a sequel, I hope she is able to edit out a little of the ‘I’m not saying this applies to everyone’ stuff. People ought to be smart enough to know that, and if they aren’t, telling them repeatedly isn’t likely to help.
Overall, great book, definitely worthy of my time and attention.

Science doesn't speak for itself. Neck-deep in work that can be messy and confounding and naïve in the ways of public communication, scientists are often unable to package their insights into the neat narratives that the public requires. Enter celebrities, advocates, lobbyists, and the funders behind them, who take advantage of scientists' reluctance to provide easy answers, flooding the media with misleading or incorrect claims about health risks. In Bad Advice, Paul A. Offit shares hard-earned wisdom on the dos and don'ts of battling misinformation.

Powerful Book, Fact Filled and Interesting
Revisado: 03-08-24
When my children were two years old and a baby, I took them to get their scheduled vaccines. Later that night, my normally placid son cried himself to exhaustion. This was in 1996 and anti-vaccine advocates were just becoming vocal in my area. The doctor said she would not use that vaccine anymore with my children. Instead, future doses of that particular vaccine would be given to my children using a new ‘not live’ vaccine. That was all it took for me to become an antivaxxer. The thought that I might have caused harm to my children obsessed me to the point that it was impossible for me to think reasonably about my vaccine decisions.
The scientific community did not help, in my opinion. All the talking I heard came from antivaxxers. From doctors? “Vaccines are safe. Do you want your child to die from a horrible disease? No? Then vaccinate.” I did not like being patronized at by the doctors. This made it very easy to fall in line with the people who looked like me, sounded like me, were parents like me, and said they cared about children.
This book has changed my mind. Offit is genuine, intelligent, clear spoken, and nicely intense in his desire to get his points across. Finally! An actual real human who admits that sometimes he makes mistakes and is not perfect, yet is educated and experienced in the subject he is talking about!
I learned a LOT from this book. Do you want your child to die from a horrible disease? No? Then don’t follow ANYONE blindly! Not me, not Offit, and not the antivaxxers. Do your research and use sources that have the studies to back it up! This book is an excellent starting point in that.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

This is an important book. It is well researched and written. The narrator does an excellent job. The subject matter is of an intensity that required me to take frequent breaks from the book. It was a hard book to read and I am glad I stuck with it.

Genuine People, Kept Me Guessing
Revisado: 08-11-23
I kept trying to pigeonhole the characters. “Ah, this person is the jerk,” or “Here’s the REAL main character!” I realized about a third of the way in that this was lazy listening on my part. This book was having none of that! The characters were so very real, very complex, no ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys’. I loved this book.

Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

Warning: Spoilers in My Review!
Revisado: 07-02-23
I am going to type a sentence or two or three to bury the spoilers in my review so that nobody accidentally sees them. The book was well written. The narration was excellent! The story was gripping. Here’s the spoiler parts; I like a book with a happy ending. I generally don’t read books in which people die. I especially don’t like books where people die and they weren’t ‘bad guys’. I want to read things that make me laugh! I want the protagonist to come out on top! This book made me laugh out loud several many times. But the end…so well done…and so very dark. What a letdown! I know a lot of people like that sort of thing. Not me. This was a very good book I wish I hadn’t read.

Different in a Good Way
Revisado: 06-19-23
The hero is likable. The villain is just the right amount of villainous. The supporting characters have their own personalities. I liked this book a lot! I expect some things in fantasy. This book delivered on all the things I expect, and it threw several surprises my way also! One nice surprise was that the hero is a normal looking person, not some stunningly beautiful character. What a nice change! I’m happily certain I’m going to enjoy the second installment.
