Covered most of it
Revisado: 02-07-22
I love Mythology but the constant Jesus references is petty and arbitrary. They literally say the resurrection of Jesus came from Egyptian Mythology as if it’s the only story of its kind. Plenty of cultures around the world have similar elements to it yet are in no way recreations . I’m guessing all the pyramids around the world were taken from Egypt as well?

I’m learning Norwegian
Revisado: 07-25-20
My wife speaks and is Norwegian, she approves of these lessons for me. The only critique she made was how they teach the greeting phrases. To ask: “how’s it going?”, they use the phrase: “hvordan har du det?”, which is correct but most people say: “hvordan går det?” I can see why they use that less used phrase tho, the words “har, du, and det” are used often in these first chapters. Overall I think it’s quite engaging and really warms up my mind to speak without thinking. I’m a tough critique because I expect proper structure when listening to academic lectures. I approve of this and I would check out “Adventures of Nils”

As raiders and explorers, the Vikings played a decisive role in the formation of Latin Christendom, and particularly of western Europe. Now, in a series of 36 vivid lectures by an honored teacher and classical scholar, you have the opportunity to understand this remarkable race as never before, studying the Vikings not only as warriors, but in all of the other roles in which they were equally extraordinary - merchants, artists, kings, raiders, seafarers, shipbuilders, and creators of a remarkable literature of myths and sagas.

I’m dedicated to academics with in or outside a classroom and this lecture fell nothing short of a college lecture. Everything I wanted to know and more on the subject. The lecturer has the energy to please even the hardest critic. Great execution on chronology, foreshadowing, staying on topic and comprehensive details. Looking forward to other lectures by Mr.Harl.

Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

Hardest critic
Revisado: 11-01-18
I would like all my studies of multiple groups to be organized. I would also hope the professor keeps a chronological order. In this lecture I see that he does a descent job at keeping things organized for the virgin ears. It’s a lot of information to digest. It doesn’t go exactly into the details of the people as much as he goes into detail of their impacts and triumphs on the world. I would not change anything about this but I do think making separate audio lectures on each of these tribes would be an awesome encore.

Historia
Nicomachean Ethics is Aristotle’s most famous work on the subject of ethics and virtue. He believed that ethical knowledge is not precise knowledge, like logic and mathematics, but general knowledge like nutrition and exercise. Since ethics is a practical discipline rather than a theoretical one, he thought that to become "good", one could not simply study what virtue is; one must actually be virtuous.

It was a proper over view. I think reading Aristotle’s writings first will make this lecture more satisfying, but it isn’t necessary.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

A review from a stickler
Revisado: 12-09-17
I have bought well into The Great Courses. I will have soon purchased all their books. I love to learn, to a point where I listen to the same lecture multiple times in order to memorize the valuable information. This book gave me a perfect chronological layout. Professor Brier stuck to the necessary material that a non Egyptologist needs to hear in order to truly grasp this culture. Thank you Professor Brier for your knowledge and comical charisma and thank you The Great Courses/Teaching Company for putting this knowledge together; also a big thanks to Audible for quenching my thirst for knowledge at a respectable price.

Where do we come from? How did our ancestors settle this planet? How did the great historic civilizations of the world develop? How does a past so shadowy that it has to be painstakingly reconstructed from fragmentary, largely unwritten records nonetheless make us who and what we are?
These 36 lectures bring you the answers that the latest scientific and archaeological research and theorizing suggest about human origins, how populations developed, and the ways in which civilizations spread throughout the globe.
