Historia
Late on a spring night in 1920, five boys cross the Yorkshire dales to the ruins of Fountains Abbey, intent on raising the Devil. Instead, they stumble over the Devil himself, sitting there watching them. Terrified, they run for their lives, leaving behind a book on alchemy stolen from their schoolmaster. The next morning, a body is discovered in the cloisters of the abbey--a man swathed in a hooded cloak and wearing a gas mask.

The narrator made this book work for me
Revisado: 05-23-14
Would you listen to A Pale Horse again? Why?
Yes. In fact, I have a few narrators that I will listen to again if I can't find a book of interest and one of those narrators is Simon Prebble.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Pale Horse?
I think this one, more than the others in the series, had a wonderful culmination of events where secrets were revealed. In this particular story, there were a few surprises I hadn't seen coming and that's always a good thing.
What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?
His voice is smooth, not over acted. There are some narrators who disappear as the story unfolds and you are aware of only the story. There are some who are so bland or over acting that you wish for another narrator, any narrator. And then there is Simon Prebble, a narrator whose voice enhances the story. He does any good book justice and he served this one very well.
Any additional comments?
I hadn't realized how much the narrator brought to this series until I listened to another audio book with a different narrator -- I didn't finish that one. If you've turned away from this series with any other narrator, give this one a try.

Historia
Fitzwilliam Darcy is devastated. The joy of his recent wedding has been cut short by the news of the sudden death of his father’s beloved cousin, Samuel Darcy. Elizabeth and Darcy travel to Dorset, a popular Regency resort area, to pay their respects to the well-traveled and eccentric Samuel. But this is no summer holiday. Danger bubbles beneath Dorset’s peaceful surface as strange and foreboding events begin to occur. Several of Samuel’s ancient treasures go missing, and then his body itself disappears.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 05-23-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Nothing. The interaction between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy was just awful
Has The Mysterious Death of Mr. Darcy turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, just other books in what appears to be a potential series
What does Jane Copland bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
In book form or audiobook, the constant professions of love between Darcy and Elizabeth would turn anyone off. I left the book for a couple of weeks, but the thoughts of going back to listen to it made me ill. Hated it. The mystery was viable, the dialogue between these two characters was sickening. I bought this book because Pride and Prejudice was my favourite book of all time and Lizzy and Darcy my favourite characters. I gave this book every chance for that reason. If the mystery had been more compelling I might have been able to tune out the contact professions of undying love, but maybe not. Remove those professions of love and this book might only be an hour long.
What character would you cut from The Mysterious Death of Mr. Darcy?
Elizabeth and Darcy.
Any additional comments?
I can only hope that if this is a series, Elizabeth and Darcy get over the glow of love and start interacting like normal people in that era.

Don't like narrator for earlier books in series
Revisado: 04-08-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this series, however, would suggest the listener start at the beginning of the series. I started at the end and worked my way back. When I got to this narrator I was not willing to listen. The latter books had been performed by Simon Prebble but this narrator's performance was ...well, just frustrating to listen to. It seemed choppy and the narration interfered with the story. However, if I had started listening to this narrator in the beginning and then moved on to Prebble, I would not have had a better narrator to compare this one too. Of course, it is very probably I would not have moved forward to enjoy the rest of the series.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have changed nothing about the story.
How could the performance have been better?
I don't often complain about a narrator, and I feel I might be unfair in my complaints here. However, if the narration had been slower in places, not as 'excited' or 'animated' in others it would have helped with the flow.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes!
Any additional comments?
I love this series and am forcing myself to go on with this book. I may yet abandon it. I have over 400 books in my library and have abandoned only two others -- neither because of the narrator.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 07-13-13
What made the experience of listening to Tell Me the most enjoyable?
The story itself was the best part of the experience.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, definitely!
What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?
Loved it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I chose it to go to sleep listening to, but had to stay awake for as long as I could because the story was so good.
Any additional comments?
Well worth the credit.

Poor narration by Paul Costanzo
Revisado: 07-12-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Because the male narration was so awful, this was a book I would have preferred to read.
Would you recommend Bombshell to your friends? Why or why not?
The book yes, but I would never recommend the audiobook. The male narration was stiff and unnatural, more like reading.
Would you be willing to try another one of Renee Raudman and Paul Costanzo ’s performances?
No
Did Bombshell inspire you to do anything?
No
Any additional comments?
The male narration was so bad I will avoid books narrated by him in the future.

Spectacular, as usual
Revisado: 01-23-13
If you could sum up Without Fail in three words, what would they be?
I have listened to all he Jack Reacher books, and loved them all. Without Fail is no exception. Contains the usual attention to detail, depth of characters.
Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
For me, the Jack Reacher books aren't complete without Dick Hill as the narrator. I've also started looking for other books with him as a narrator now that I've listened to all of the Jack Reacher novels. The other books narrated by Dick Hill have the same superb performance.

Virgil's always been known for having a somewhat active, er, social life, but he's probably not going to be getting too many opportunities for that during his new case. While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, he gets a call from Lucas Davenport to investigate a murder at a nearby resort.

Good Story BUT....
Revisado: 07-11-09
Unfortunately, the relatively good story is overshadowed by a monotone narrator and choppy descriptions. I had read previous reviews and so I knew of the series of one-word descriptions. I bought it anyway. The many descriptions made up of a series of single words did little to allow me to picture a scene and did a lot to add to my impatience with the book. Perhaps reading this book would have been a better option. This is probably the only audio book I have ever regretted purchasing.

This book was amazing and the narrator's voice was perfect for it. The tension in the story built to an amazing end, all the pieces neatly tied up. Keep your tissues handy, though. It is a book I couldn't put down, will never forget, and will listen to over and over again.
