Historia
Two astronomers have detected a strange, pulsing signal from deep space. Within hours, the US government goes into lockdown, restricting airspace and scrubbing scientific data. Was the signal an intercepted communication revealing alarming plans for an enemy’s military strike? Or has humanity at long last found proof of extraterrestrial life?

I didn’t realize this was a short story, and I’m glad I didn’t know. A fan of First Contact stories, this one is unique. There is a dilemma that calls into question morality, self-deception, and truthfulness.

Historia
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Maybe not for audio
Revisado: 09-23-24
Everything starts out ok. Then things start fracture, overlap and confuse, which is actually what the story is about. But it’s difficult to follow. It’s a lot of narrative in different places, but with the same people, not a lot of interaction with life on earth. My 2 cents.

The repetition!
Revisado: 06-12-24
Ugh. So many things. Rosemary’s voice sounded like a doped up resident in an insane asylum with laryngitis. I kept hoping it was going to change at some point. What is supposed to be silly banter, isn’t. It’s just boring and pedantic. I’m sure reading it at your own speed would help, but not on audio. I get that Athena is the teen that is supposed to be the voice of reason, but comes across as a terrible daughter being constantly rude and picking at her mother. I would have slapped her every other sentence. I don’t find their relationship as “real”. Sorry and keep writing. Everyone improves with practice.

There is a good pace, with normal culmination and solution at the end. Character development was so-so. The English characters were portrayed stereotypically, rather than realistically.

No way to forecast Ashley Bell
Revisado: 02-28-23
You know, when you are about a chapter or so in a book, and you think, “Oh I know where this is headed.” Some tropes are so overused, you could practically write it yourself. This isn’t that.
Yes, it’s a Dean Koontz, but with that slight step beyond reality and place, where we all think we’ve been.
It’s a great listen with some exceptional narration. You never notice a jarring transition between characters.
The only thing you will expect is a dog. Because dogs belong in every book and home.

Cold Eyes audio
Revisado: 05-04-22
First, if you’ve read this book, go listen to it. There are nuances and information that were perhaps not perceived in written format. The humor, voices and enjoyment of the main characters also elevated the action.
One positive you will always encounter in all Peter Cawdron’s first contact books, is a steady, paced, explanation of basic space science and technology. Although I don’t always understand it all, I enjoy that 5s flash of, “Oh, I get this!”
We are all conditioned to know what First Contact will bring; war or friendship. Cawdron’s books are an enjoyable revelation of the hundreds of ways First Contact can happen. And, you will love them all!

In the attempt to play all the characters, the narrator’s voice drops really low, then really loud. It was hard to adjust a volume to hear the whole thing.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Having read and watched The Martian, I thought I’d give this a try via audible. I was not disappointed. Just enough Science and Physics, friendship, and clever outcomes. The narrator has a great pace and modulated pace. He sounds uncannily like Tom Hanks!

A different take on time travel
Revisado: 10-04-16
For those who have read many time tradable stories, you know it's usually based on a specific place, talisman, or magic. It any scientific explanation is involved, it's the time folding/wrinkle- type. This is the first I've read that really takes on the multi-verse take, and dives into the inherent difficulties and paradoxes of the theory. Building an interesting story to bring it to life is even more challenging. So kudos to Crouch for combining theory and story in such a way that the reader can grasp the idea and enjoy an adventure. I listened to it on Audible and the narrator does a good job. Good pace, no weird voices or grating mispronunciations.

Narration detracted from story
Revisado: 04-27-16
The story is fairly light and linear but the narration made it quite unbearable to listen too. Raising the voice to a fake falsetto and just talking slower does not develop a character. There were also odd pauses when the narrator noticed there was one more word in a sentence. Some words were just totally read incorrectly. Sorry, but there it is.
