A Politicized Take on Debt: Ideology Masquerading as Scholarship

I found Debt: The First 5,000 Years to be a highly biased account of debt, markets, and money. The book presents an extreme left-wing, quasi-communist perspective on the economy, attempting to disguise itself in scholarly language while subtly guiding readers toward a rejection of the very system that has driven innovation, growth, and human development over the past 500 years.

Graeber selectively romanticizes informal debt—agreements between acquaintances or small-scale exchanges—while implicitly undermining the legitimacy of other forms of debt. This seems to suggest that financial obligations should be dismissed at will and that individuals are incapable of making their own decisions about borrowing to achieve their goals. It reflects the classic paternalistic mindset of the left: the assumption that politicians or intellectual elites are better suited to make economic choices on behalf of ordinary citizens.

While the book does contain interesting historical anecdotes, its ideological slant and implicit disdain for modern economic systems make it more of a political manifesto than an objective exploration of debt.

Good first half, very technical second part

This is a good book to learn about sleep and specially circadian cycle, which goes beyond sleep and include many other bodily functions. It's quite a technical read, delving into every hormone in the body, at times resembling a textbook more than a book for general readership (which might have been the author's intent), especially the latter half.

I think that if this had been my first book on the topic, I would have enjoyed it better. I definitely enjoyed "Why we sleep" more, though I think Russel's one has a more positive tone, which I appreciate.

Again this feels very much as a text book, if you really one a deep dive on the circadian science, go for it, but be prepared to be bombarded with hundreds of names and complex medical terms.

Extremely disappointing, I do not understand the average rate that this book has.

I had had the "men are from Mars women are from Venus" book on my list for a long time, and when I was about to buy it I saw there was this (sort of) new version and went for it.

The first 5 chapters are one simple idea, repeated endlessly to the point that you actually wonder if you have accidentally listened to the same chapter twice.
Beyond that, there are a couple of ideas about balancing male and female qualities that could make some sense, but the author does not offer too much proof of it beyond his opinion, and given that I caught him saying some mistakes about hormones related to sleep (that totally contradict current articles) I could not take them as true.
Additionally, he seems to suggest that the previous differences between men and women have blurred, which is correct, but the way he describes men and women tendencies seems anachronistic and sexist (in a wrong way)
One of the worst books I have ever read

I feel kinda guilty to say this but sometimes we need to remind ourselves how lucky we are to have people we love and that love us. Of course, life is complex and all of us get our fair share of problems, but how we feel trumps all the rest of our circumstances. This books presents people going through unbearable situations and doing all they can to survive their inner (often caused by outer) suffering

The author is the typical sales person that really gets under my skin, until I started to appreciate that definitely has a point and I was wrong. Anyway, even after this realisation I kept having mixed feelings because of his style, but the message really important and everybody should read it

Whenever I see anything similar to a list of predictions for the future I run away as fast as possible, I only gave this book a shot because of the author previous books. I am so glad I did. Of course this is a good future looking book because it focuses more on the questions than the answers, and allow the reader to make his own conclusions, but the questions and the cues are so thoughtful

Most realistic but still positive parenthood description

Parenthood describe really as it is, no filters, no sweetener, no bullshit. It shows all the struggles that parenthood entail and, at least for me, makes you love your children even more. Didn’t love the voice of the author, though I always appreciate whenever an author puts the effort to read her novel herself
