Historia
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

Good but weakest entry in the series so far
Revisado: 01-31-25
Spoilers. The first bobiverse entry I just like, rather than love. The whole book felt more like a setup for the next title than a story in itself. Or else this should have been the first half of a longer, more complete story.
I love every part of Icarus’s plotline and wish there were more of it.
The dragons felt unfortunately uninspired, like a halfhearted attempt to recapture the magic of the previous book. I kept wanting to get to the more interesting plot lines and having to “get through” the dragons. This felt like a rushed, watered down version of the captivating, longer and more detailed Quinlan saga in Heavens River.
Thoth, having never interacted with any characters felt like a hollow concern, which may or may not turn into an actual threat or ally in the future. Again, this feels like a setup for a future, engaging storyline with Thoth, which is what much of this book feels like to me.
It just felt like I spent several hours listening to this with no satisfying payoff. Please do not misunderstand, this continues to be one of the best audiobook series out there and I am nonetheless excited for the next entry, it just does not quite live up to the first four novels.

Historia
It's the most dangerous case of Will Trent's career. He knows this from the moment he sets foot in the abandoned Atlanta warehouse where a body lies on the floor—the body of an ex-cop. Bloody footprints leading away from the scene reveal that another victim, evidently a woman, was carried away and has vanished into thin air. And, worst of all, the warehouse belongs to the city's biggest and most high-profile athlete—a local hero protected by the world's most expensive lawyers.

One of the better will Trent’s so far
Revisado: 04-14-24
I am slowly going through the will Trent audiobooks, listening to other books from other series in between. The last couple were good but felt a little stale, a little bit like going through the motions. The kept woman was gripping and memorable, one of the better entries in the series for me. Will finally is forced to deal with the elephant in his relationship and stop putting it off, which is about time.

Historia
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

Well paced and researched, spot on narration
Revisado: 02-08-23
False Witness is a a superb thriller even by Slaughter standards. I could not stop listening. Fair warning, there is no "mystery" aspect to this one, it is a pure thriller not a thriller/mystery novel, and that is OK.
It is always refreshing to read or listen to a Slaughter book, because you can tell she actually researches the science,
medicine etc. when writing a story. It was a breath of fresh air to read a book with a veterinarian in it, which was actually well-researched. I have gotten in the habit or pre-rolling my eyes when a book starts to mention anything related to veterinary medicine, because it always makes me cringe how the author has no idea what they are talking about. This author gets it almost all correct, right down to the dose of Buprenex for a cat.
Kathleen Early is a top-5 narrator for me, and is the only person who should be narrating any of Slaughter's books. She can paint the scene better, and show more genuine emotion narrating an audiobook than the majority of A-list actors/actresses in film.

This series gets better with every installment. Marsters is clearly taking this narration seriously, with genuine emotions and passion in his voice acting, it really makes a difference when the narrator cares about the story and characters.

Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored. We look like a normal couple. We're your neighbors, the parents of your kid's friend, the acquaintances with whom you keep meaning to get dinner. We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive. Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

Worth the listen but no real surprises
Revisado: 09-26-22
I like the way this is written, it was fun but also predictable, really no twists you didn’t see miles beforehand. The reader is easy and pleasant enough to listen to when speaking through the first person perspective (most of the book) but all his women voices are grating.

Pretty good if a bit long for what it was
Revisado: 08-19-22
Not sure why there are so many complaints about the voice acting, it wasn’t stellar but it’s also not a hugely successful book that’s going to get the best voice actors. They fit the characters and had good pace and inflections.
I was mislead by the description I was expecting a mystery thriller. This is a heartwarming story of unrelated people connected by shared trauma and tragedy, and how they come to terms with their inner demons and move on after; or literally “what comes after.”
It’s not my genre of preference so personally I would give it a 3-star for my personal enjoyment level, but I am basing my review on how the story’s was for its genre, as all reviews should be. I really felt a lot of the internal wriggles of the characters and how they healed emotionally over time.
My only complaint is it was maybe 1/3 longer of a book than it had to be to convey the same message with the same quality. Overall if you are into this type of book I recommend it.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Spoilers: Worth listening but story is predictable
Revisado: 08-19-21
There will be spoilers later in this review with a warning beforehand. I will always enjoy any story narrated by Ray Porter. This book, The Fold, is the sequel to the book 14. I thought 14 was a fun, inventive mystery with characters that were diverse and interesting. It was a ride peeling back each new layer of the mystery in 14.
The Fold is worthwhile, and I do plan to keep listening to this series. The problem with this story is that, after having listened to 14, there is zero mystery. You know exactly what is going on the whole time.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD
I wanted to express some of my frustration with the storyline, and I couldn't do so without spoilers. The Fold does not have any mystery. I already knew everything that happened in 14, so I know all about the inter-dimensional travel and the alpha predators. After the first scene where the character (forgot his name) came home and didn't recognize his wife, and then just a short while later when they explain the theory behind how the door works in Washington when they are asking for funding, it was very painfully obvious that what happened was that the character from the first scene walked through the door and came into a different dimension, one that happened to be different enough that he married a different woman. I then spent the next very painful 6 hours listening to Mike try to piece together a "mystery" that was completely and totally predictable from the very beginning of the book. It was very frustrating the whole time because of how obvious it was.
If it turns out in future books that Anne is part of The Family then that will also be disappointing, because that seems like a very obvious conclusion to draw, from the moment she said that her brother died at a "family thing" in the very city where 14 took place.
I think that Mike's character was intriguing, and that the last 2-3 hours were fun. But otherwise, honestly, about 2/3 of the book could have been completely cut out, because they were all about unraveling a mystery that never existed. Still as a writer Peter Clines is great and I still want to know what happens with this story and will keep listening.
