Mildly amusing
Revisado: 04-18-25
Reviews on this novel that purported hilarity seemed to be inflated. There was, at best, a reluctant chuckle buried in there somewhere. It was well written in a humorous tone, but the laughs were evasive for this listener.

Historia
Jacques McKeown is the most celebrated author of star-pilot fiction in the galaxy. He's rich, famous, and living in luxury, and his universe-wide fanbase eagerly awaits any news of his next book. There's just one small hitch. He's not Jacques McKeown. He's Dashford Pierce, star pilot and con artist, and if only the impatient calls from his publisher were the worst of his problems. There's also the last vestige of the Henderson crime gang, trouble brewing in the retired star-pilot community, and a small matter of somebody trying to kill him.

Mildly amusing
Revisado: 06-11-24
Author’s editor should have only allowed four similes and six metaphors per chapter. Some had merit and were worth a grin, but Yahtzee went overboard with them, trying too hard, and it became annoying. Not a page turner, but the story was a good distraction for summertime listening.

Czech stories
Revisado: 06-02-24
I normally shy away from these compilations. . .but it was under Larry Corriea’s aegis, so I downloaded it. Most of the stories were Monster Hunter worthy and I didn’t feel the need to fast forward any of them. I look forward to more Czech Fantom stories.

Vicious Author
Revisado: 03-18-24
Butcher’s escape from Harry Dresden has been successful in this series. Excellent world building effort. Not too many characters with magic talents to keep track of. Best of all, one cares about the characters throughout the story.
The narrator’s talent is award worthy.
My only complaint is Butcher’s penchant for beating the living shit out of his protagonists to the point of taxing the reader’s suspension of belief. There regularly appears to be scarcely enough left of a hero to be scooped up and deposited in a Petri dish after a story’s violent encounter. Yes, drama. Yes, a hero’s suffering that needs to be overcome. Yes, good literary fight choreography.
But enough. The continuous near annihilation of a character becomes tedious and I skip ahead.

Historia
It is 1847, and almost a full year after being shipwrecked on another, far stranger and more dangerous Earth on their way to fight Santa Anna in the Mexican-American War, Lewis Cayce and his small group of artillerymen, infantrymen, and dragoons have made friends in the Yucatán, helped build an army, and repulsed the first efforts of the blood-drenched Holy Dominion to wipe their new friends out.

Engaging as I’ve followed the series from the beginning, but disappointed that the previous timeline didn’t connect. Now we wait for Mr. Anderson to get writing to wrap the story up.

Historia
Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Enjoyable despite the brevity
Revisado: 05-10-23
Liked the story. For once, the author didn’t subject Dresden to his routine physical beatings to the point of almost dead. I liked most of Butcher’s narration, as Marston sometimes reads Dresden’s inner dialogue like the character is on verge of suicide instead of having a wiseass sense of humor. I was expecting to be disappointed by the brevity of the story, but it satisfied my enjoyment of continuity with the series and the characters.

Historia
The biggest lie in history is about to be shattered. UFOs are real. In late June of 1947, three extraterrestrial craft were downed outside Roswell Air Force Base. Many more followed, revealing dozens of ET species and a Rosetta Stone to a new physics, an energy generation and propulsion system responsible for interstellar space travel. This new system could have easily replaced oil, gas, coal, and nuclear plants - and with them, the entire geopolitical and economic order on our planet. But a cabal of bankers, the military-industrial complex, and Big Oil stopped it.

Rehash?
Revisado: 09-24-21
Mildly disappointed. Essentially a rehash of the series except set a century before. American military gets swept to the world of the cats, they form an army, & beat the bad guys.
Having been dragged this far through the series, I was hoping for a denouement, but felt dragged back by this book.
The writing was good. The descriptions of mid-1800 weapons and tactics were interesting. The array of characters & relationships could be easily transposed from the previous destroyer men stories to this one.
So, OK, I guess.
