A Great Addition to a Terrific Series
Revisado: 06-22-24
I've really enjoyed this series so far, and this latest work was a solid entry that took the story in some interesting directions and provided fairly satisfying conclusions for many of the characters fans have come to know and love. The progression of technology and stakes in this series call to mind The Three Body Problem (albeit on a much more relatable timeline). I especially like the way that, as AI has come to play a larger part in our real lives, the author has seemingly sought to include some small details that flesh out the AI entities in this series and make them all the more plausible and familiar. MacLeod Andrews narration, as always, is wonderful and provides exactly what the story calls for.
One minor critique: I wish the author had gone into slightly more detail about the advent of programmable matter. The series has done a great job making near-future advancements such as nanobots, artificial general intelligence, and gravitational manipulation feel plausible and fleshed out. Programmable matter, however, is sort of hand-waved without much exploration of the ramifications or limitations of the tech. Those types of fascinating technical tangents are part of the reason I keep coming back to this series. However, I do understand that others may find those types of details tedious, so it's a matter of personal preference.
If this does turn out to be the last book in the Killday series, as the summary implies, it's a satisfying enough sendoff. Though, if that does turn out to be the case, I will say that the denouement (particularly the epilogue) felt a little rushed for my liking. I would have liked more time with some of these characters as their shared journey drew to a close.
I'm holding out hope that this isn't the end, but a jumping-off point for a deeper exploration of the questions Ledbetter has explored so well in this series this far. However, if the author decides his work here is done, I would like to thank him for providing a wonderfully thought-provoking and exciting series that was a genuine pleasure to listen to!

A Worthy Successor
Revisado: 08-05-21
A great continuation and expansion of the world which Ledbetter so deftly built (and tore down) in Level 5. While the sequel does not pack as many twists and gee-whiz technical marvels as the first installment, great character writing and tightly depicted tension-filled sequences make up for it. Andrews' narration is as varied and expressive as ever as he brings the characters to life with impressive depth and bredth.
I can't wait to see where the story goes next.

Unfunny and Lazy
Revisado: 07-06-21
Sitting through the author's hamfisted jokes felt like watching that one uncle who swears he could be a stand-up comedian try his material on a captive Thanksgiving audience. The material wasn't even incisive enough to offend the people that the author was probably hoping to "trigger". The book is packed with eye-rollingly stale takes on everything from politics to youth culture. If this was meant to be a Colbert-esqe parody of the type of person represented by the protagonist or a deconstruction of sci-fi's normally liberal-leaning tropes, then it doesn't come through in Baldwin's performance. I'd recommend this to anyone who unironically refers to someone as a "millennial" or "socialist" at least once a week. Otherwise, skip it.

Historia
Eleanor, the charming manager of a cozy tea shop, enjoys the transportive ritual of making a cup of Masala Chai tea, reminisces about the tea's origins, and delights in the beauty of her quaint English village during the holidays. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world's most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don't stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

Puts me right to sleep

I never make it past the twenty minute mark. I'm usually asleep by the time the narrator picks which tea she wants to drink.
