Great narration, and fascinating fictional story about a man we know little about

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I lived this book! Learned, funny, fascinating. Tge narrator was perfect for the text. I’d love a sequel!

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Historia
In the tradition of books by such bestselling physician-authors as Atul Gawande, Siddhartha Mukherjee, and Danielle Ofri, this beautifully written memoir by an emergency room doctor takes place during one of his routine shifts at an urban ER. Intimately narrated as it follows the experiences of real patients, it is filled with fascinating, adrenaline-pumping scenes of rescues and deaths, and the critical, often excruciating follow-through in caring for the patients’ families.

I’m sure that writing this was very cathartic for the author, but this sure needed a good editor. He is very sincere, but goes in far, far too long to make his points.
And the reader? Oh my gosh. I lost track of his mispronunciations. “Death-reserving?” Demured, not demurred? Talk about needing an editor. (Ca-NOO-la? In a medical memoir?)
Pretty disappointing

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Great story, terrible music
Revisado: 03-15-23
I liked the charming story, and loved the readers. However, the loud rock music they chose to use for background and the balls was annoying—guess they were trying for a TV Bridgerton vibe. (Spoiler: it didn’t work.)

Historia
As the chief forensic anthropologist for the FBI’s Chicago field office, Christine Prusik has worked her fair share of bizarre cases. Yet this one trumps them all: a serial killer is strangling young women and dumping their bodies in the steep, forested ravines of southern Indiana. With each victim, the killer leaves a calling card: a stone figurine carved like the spirit stones found among the native tribes of Papua New Guinea—the same tribes Prusik worked with a decade earlier while doing field research.

I enjoyed this overall, but the FBI parts seemed pretty unrealistic. The Indians parts, though, felt real. I enjoyed the reader.

Moving read, read beautifully
Revisado: 09-05-22
I enjoyed this book—the sincerity of the author shines through. A kind of whodunnit that kept me guessing. The reader is perfect for the material. I loved how she brought to life the author’s descriptions of nature, well as the characters she voiced.

Historia
Childhood friends Patricia Delfine and Laurence Armstead didn't expect to see each other again after parting ways under mysterious circumstances during high school. After all, the development of magical powers and the invention of a two-second time machine could hardly fail to alarm one's peers and families. But now they're both adults, living in the hipster mecca San Francisco, and the planet is falling apart around them.

The narrator was excellent. The story, thought, had a lot of magical realism mixed with computer tech and just didn’t work for me. I had enough interest in the story to keep me going, but probably should have bailed early on.

The Mountain and the Sea is a romantic tale about letting go of the past and embracing the present.

Not worth the time

So much of this was given to longing appraisals of Monty’s body. The story could have been half as long. Liberation of Esther through sex seems cliched, in Jamaica or anywhere else. Reader was fine.
