I know I loved this story as a child, and read it then. This narrator is so overdrawn I couldn't listen at all to it
Very sad

Historia
In 1848, the British East India Company, having lost its monopoly on the tea trade, engaged Robert Fortune, a Scottish gardener, botanist, and plant hunter, to make a clandestine trip into the interior of China - territory forbidden to foreigners - to steal the closely guarded secrets of tea horticulture and manufacturing. For All the Tea in China is the remarkable account of Fortune's journeys into China - a thrilling narrative that combines history, geography, botany, natural science, and old-fashioned adventure.

Delightful!
Revisado: 04-27-11
I love micro histories about odd bits of the world. This one is a delight. It's full of a great deal of information about tea, British imperialism, China, India and that point in time. All in all, it's an interestingly drawn picture.
The author is not a great narrator, but she really didn't get in the way of her story. I found it a treat.

Such a cheap trick end!
Revisado: 04-09-11
There are interesting questions within this book, but it's almost more satire than real. Who could possibly design a child as spare parts for a child? Yuck.
But the end is one where they get exactly what they asked for. It's a prayer the devil answers. And it's as cheap a trick as I've heard of in a story. I was so let down.

Historia
In Christopher Moore's ingenious debut novel, we meet one of the most memorably mismatched pairs in the annals of literature. The good-looking one is one-hundred-year-old ex-seminarian and "roads" scholar Travis O'Hearn. The green one is Catch, a demon with a nasty habit of eating most of the people he meets.

Grotty

I found the first five minutes of this so grotty I couldn't go further. I loved A Dirty Job, but this is about college boys. I don't think it would be enjoyable unless you were one.

Historia
The chartered Zarathustra Company had it all their way. Their charter was for a Class III uninhabited planet, which Zarathustra was, and it meant they owned the planet lock stock and barrel. They exploited it, developed it and reaped the huge profits from it without interference from the Colonial Government. Then Jack Holloway, a sunstone prospector, appeared on the scene with his family of Fuzzies and the passionate conviction that they were not cute animals but little people.

Interesting but disturbing.
Revisado: 02-15-10
I can't say I didn't finish this book, but it went to some very dark places.it's a redemption layered over about a half dozen betrayals. It's also a view of rural Wisconsin in the 1880s that I suspect is probably quite true.

great series, great read
Revisado: 06-08-09
I love this series and this is Perry at his best. Jane Whitefield represents alternative thought in her native American background, and in it's own way, alternative ethics. But it's a hard edge story that I did not guess the end to (and I can almost always guess the end).

miserable
Revisado: 08-29-08
This is a miserable book! The characters are not particularly medieval in their actions and the gratuitous sex scene after the wife's death is nasty. The book is grim in ways that are probably historic. I'm sure medieval life was hard, but this applies modern responses to it in a way that does not work. Very hard to listen to and annoying.

Good book well read
Revisado: 07-22-08
This is an old favorite book to begin with. But it's a delight read. My only issue is with the stuttering dolphins. It's written into the text but I think it could have been handled better.
