Historia
D. H. Lawrence's controversial classic, The Rainbow, follows the lives and loves of three generations of the Brangwen family between 1840 and 1905. Their tempestuous relationships are played out against a backdrop of change as they witness the arrival of industrialization - the only constant being their unending attempts to grasp a higher form of existence symbolized by the persistent, unifying motif of the "rainbow".

A Worthwhile Challenge...
Revisado: 02-15-18
I've read several D.H. Lawrence works recently and although they are in many ways dated in their attitudes, manners and worldview, I'm forever in awe of his lyricism, vocabulary and stabs at the heart of what it is to be human and to relate to the Universe....That said, I many times mourn the loss of any real plot or arc in his works..It would make it so much easier to finish his dense and lengthy works...

Historia
With its brilliant and brutal portrayal of the Corleone family, The Godfather burned its way into our national consciousness. This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld. A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is the original classic that has been often imitated, but never matched.

As familiar as this story is from the movies, the book fleshed out and added so much depth to the characters that are a part of the U.S.. culture.

Revisado: 08-03-17
Read the first two parts of the three-book novel in paperback..The first part was getting used to the style and disjointed nature...Following the characters is tough, but eventually you let the whole thing wash over you..The biographies, newsreels and Camera's Eye were welcome distractions..Powerful, tragic, infuriating and apropos..Update the references and you could write a similar book today..Not much has changed...

In Scoop, surreptitiously dubbed "a newspaper adventure", Waugh flays Fleet Street and the social pastimes of its war correspondants as he tells how William Boot became the star of British super-journalism and how, leaving part of his shirt in the claws of the lovely Katchen, he returned from Ishmaelia to London as the "Daily's Beast's" more accoladed overseas reporter.

Reading 100 Modern Novels, so probably wouldn't have come across this otherwise...Although a dated setting, the characters pop off the page..Some storylines, especially Al Greco, were left hanging, but life doesn't always tie off neatly...

Historia
Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America.
