Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Great “Destination”, but mediocre “Journey”
Revisado: 01-18-25
First on the positives. The ending of this book is great. Last 2 hours of listen time are peak. Kal and Szeth overall are great. However, there lot of issues with this book. Way too long. It needed better editing. I can tell you whole chapters that have no point and could have been deleted. Way too corporate. It’s like Sanderson had a check list of mental health. In his previous books it was fine because it was show not tell. This book seemed all tell. And with that tell. It was super preachy. I re-read way of kings before this book which was great. But the tone just felt so much worst. It become so much more YA. Thing is there is a good book in there. I will always love Stormlight. Just wish the tone was more like they early books and lot was edited out

The Roman Republic was the most remarkable state in history. What began as a small community of peasants camped among marshes and hills ended up ruling the known world. Rubicon paints a vivid portrait of the Republic at the climax of its greatness - the same greatness which would herald the catastrophe of its fall. It is a story of incomparable drama.

Great book on my favorite time in Roman history. Its main focus is on Sulla to Augustus. There is little background information at the start but it mainly focuses on this timeline.

I was little sad that the new book in the realm of the Elderlings would move on from Fitz and the 6 duchies. But this book is amazing. It starts little slow. But it gets good fast. Amazing book and well worth it

Historia
Of the crucial men close to President Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton was the most powerful and controversial. Stanton raised, armed, and supervised the army of a million men who won the Civil War. He organized the war effort. He directed military movements from his telegraph office, where Lincoln literally hung out with him. He arrested and imprisoned thousands for "war crimes" such as resisting the draft or calling for an armistice. Stanton was so controversial that some accused him at that time of complicity in Lincoln's assassination.

With the exception of Lincoln and Grant you can say Edwin Stanton was the most important figure in leading the Union to victory in the civil war. Lincoln great secretary of war. Book goes from his early days as a lawyer in Ohio to secretary of war severing under Lincoln to his disagreements with Andrew Johnson. Great biography on this key person in American history.

Historia
At the approach of the first millennium, the Christians of Europe did not seem likely candidates for future greatness. They saw no future beyond the widely anticipated Second Coming of Christ. But when the world did not end, the peoples of Western Europe suddenly found themselves with no choice but to begin the heroic task of building a Jerusalem on Earth. In The Forge of Christendom, Tom Holland masterfully describes this remarkable new age, a time of caliphs and Viking sea kings, the spread of castles, and the invention of knighthood.
