Fun mystery

Great British wit and humour. Characters were enjoyable. The mystery kept me guessing. I hope there is another one coming.

A different way to tell a story
Revisado: 02-16-25
I was intrigued by the technique used by the author - Reconstructing a story for emails and chat transcripts. It worked pretty well, but it was a little hard to follow towards the end when the chat sessions moved to real time. Quite an intricate plot. I recommend.

Historia
In the future, nuclear war has destroyed nearly all humankind. An alien race intervenes, saving the small group of survivors from certain death. But their salvation comes at a cost. The Oankali are able to read and mutate genetic code, and they use these skills for their own survival, interbreeding with new species to constantly adapt and evolve. They value the intelligence they see in humankind but also know that the species—rigidly bound to destructive social hierarchies—is destined for failure.

Revisado: 09-22-24
Interesting concepts. Imagine if all our human faults have origins in our genes and epigenetics. Then imagine meeting a species who solve problems from a biological perspective rather than mechanics and chemistry

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

I found it entertaining. Interesting main character, in spite of all the secondary characters being very flat. Will probably get the next in the series.

Historia
James Patterson leads you into the darkest recesses of the mind with this chilling, immersive audio thriller. We meet Brent Quill, a frustrated actor trying to take his game to the next level. When he learns about the intensive Method acting process, he dives in deep—and immediately lands the lead role in a TV series about a brutal serial killer. But when the Method’s controversial techniques start to take over Brent’s psyche, the lines between real life and acting begin to blur dangerously. How far will Brent go to “become” the character?

Excellent voice actors, not an appealing story
Revisado: 11-07-22
I like James Patterson. I really like Zach Quinto. While Zach and the other actors do a good job, the material is just not believable. I quit about 1 hour in, so perhaps it gets better.
The dark path that Brent/PJ begins to descend doesn't seem to have enough build up. Frustrated actor just decides to become a killer just to be better at playing a killer simply because he hears of a acting technique that would help his middling career?
It wasn't doing it for me so I returned the book.

Historia
Only mutual communication can forge an alliance with the planet's sentient species and prove that mammals are more than tools. Forced to land on a planet they aren't prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape—trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect.

Imaginative angle thought provoking
Revisado: 02-28-21
This is not a typical first contact story. Intermingled with the human struggles is the discovery that plants in this planet are sentient. It starts slow, but hang in there.

Historia
First prize in the Skyway Soap slogan contest was an all-expenses-paid trip to the moon. The consolation prize was an authenticspace suit, and when scientifically minded high school senior Kip Russell wonit, he knew for certain he would use it one day to make a sojourn of his own tothe stars. But "one day" comes sooner than he thinks when he tries the suit on in his backyard - and finds himself worlds away, a prisoner aboard a space pirate's ship.

Very dated, very silly
Revisado: 02-16-21
I gave this one a try since Heinlein is a name fro the early days of SF.
Not sure if this was intended to be a kids book. The story line is weak, if there is a story line. Dialogue is anachronistic. A lot of time is spent talking about basic physics and other things that we typically learn in middle school. One of the main characters is a prepubescent whiz kid who can use a slide rule. I suppose that was the common state of computational ability in 1958.
If this represents typical Heinlein fare, I’ll pass.

Historia
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Predictable plot, good characterization
Revisado: 09-16-19
Not a bad story. I like Nora Roberts characters. They are well developed and believable. I found that I could pretty well guess what was going to happen well in advance of it occurring. So, for me, I don’t think I will continue on with the second book. Narration was outstanding.

You said you'd listen to your favorite narrators read anything: Well, this ambrosial new audiobook brings together an acclaimed cast of narrators to read aloud the menus of some of our favorite local restaurants here at Audible headquarters in Newark, New Jersey, as only they know how. You haven't truly lived, or dined, until you've heard Cassandra Campbell capture the emotional nuances of Newark's best Indian-inflected burgers or let Nick Podehl extol the virtues of the pear arugula salad and then seductively steer you toward a plate of creamy mushroom linguini.
