Historia
Trauma nurse Aly Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

Just completely unbelievable
Revisado: 12-07-24
I've had a bad run of luck lately. Maybe Audible's algorithm is confused, but it keeps recommending fiction works that I would consider to be nothing more than vehicles for lightweight tittilation with no substance to them. This book is a fine example of that. The characters are just completely unbelievable and two-dimensional and the story is totally implausible. It's certainly well performed though and clearly, based on other reviews, there is a big market for this stuff. For me though its just a waste of my attention. I had to skip the last 2-3 chapters as my mind started wandering.

Historia
As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smell of pine. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb. Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened.

Not her best work.
Revisado: 08-18-24
This one was a much too syrupy and predictable. Characters were all very two-dimensional. Mostly goodies and one extreme baddie. So the whole thing was completely unbelievable, even given the sixth sense premise.

Historia
Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken soccer balls on the run-down streets of East London, Gary Stevenson dreamed of something bigger. As luck would have it, he was good at numbers. At the London School of Economics, wearing tracksuits and sneakers, Stevenson shocked his posh classmates by winning a competition called “The Trading Game.” The prize? A golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader at Citibank.

Characters are becoming two dimensional
Revisado: 08-20-22
After finishing the first book I assumed things might get better but things got worse and worse. The characters seem extremely superficial, goodies and bodies with no depth and no nuance. Just totally not believable even for a fantasy novel.

Historia
A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want - money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman's past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn't know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist - an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.

Devolves into Christian nonsense
Revisado: 01-02-20
This book started out fine, but towards the end, I had to grit my teeth to keep listening and fast forward through far too much superficial Christian theologizing. It felt like this story was a subterfuge for promulgating the idea that there really is a literal fiery pit of hell complete with Hollywood-style demons waiting to grab you and drag you down if you don't toe the line and kowtow to Jesus and accept Christian dogma.
The book depends heavily on the dramatic device of a Christian god actively nudging things around in the world by sending angels to intervene. I could not stop thinking about the never-ending suffering of countless starving and abused children in war-torn countries with repressive regimes who never get rescued or live happily ever after like the super-successful artist character in this book. The author might want to try writing about one of them in a future effort to get a more thoughtful perspective on how the world works and what it really means to have faith.

This story has very imagination. It's just an animal hunting people and people hunting the animal. No drama other than that. OK if you love hunting I guess.

Vacuous plot
Revisado: 06-15-19
Nothing more than girl meets boy, girl and boy break up over a pathetic (and rather unbelievable) misunderstanding, then ... the utterly predictable happens. All with a dollop of uninteresting supernatural Cheez Whiz. If you don't like suspense or surprises, this story is for you. Narration is fine though.

Why do successful people get things done at the last minute? Why does poverty persist? Why do the lonely find it hard to make friends? These questions seem unconnected, yet Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir show that they are all are examples of a mindset produced by scarcity. Drawing on cutting-edge research from behavioral science and economics, Mullainathan and Shafir show that scarcity creates a similar psychology for everyone struggling to manage with less than they need.

Would you try another book from Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir and/or Robert Petkoff?
Not if so much of it is full of nothing as this is.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The topic is a good one. it would be ideal for a serious 12-year old.

Narrator's style not right for the content
Revisado: 10-24-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The book might have been for me if only the way it was read didn't get in the way. My mood was totally affected by the narration style to the point where I couldn't assess the stories.
Would you recommend The Great Ghost Story Collection to your friends? Why or why not?
I wouldn't recommend this reading to anyone unless they were about 5-7 years old in which case it might be perfect.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cathy Dobson?
Doug Bradley
What character would you cut from The Great Ghost Story Collection?
Not an appropriate question for a book of stories
Any additional comments?
I couldn't finish listening to this. Cathy Dobson reads as if narrating a funny fairy story to a class of 6-year-olds. In fact she would be perfect for children's stories but her style, although not unskillful, ruins the mood of these stories for me and makes them all seem faintly comical.
