Historia
After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

Really wanted to like it

I have seen raves about this title but I could not get into it. The brilliant characters came off as not so brilliant. The FMC’s actions seemed immature and vapid. MMC did not do it for me either. I DNF this one and returned it.
I had no complaints about the narration. It was completely my issues with the story.

Surprisingly enjoyed
Revisado: 10-27-24
This is not my typical book. At first, I did not like the prosody of the female reader but she grew on me quickly. I do not love crass for the sake of it, and I feel like the language of the sex and body parts crossed that line for me. I fast forwarded through some of that. The main love story is a little contrived and was very predictable. The back and forth seems a little tired. The far story and mystery is interesting enough that I will read book 2.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

There be Dragons!
Revisado: 10-06-24
I have mixed feelings about this book. The story is great and I do enjoy a certain amount of “spice” but I felt like the high word count and constant descriptions of the main characters’ sexual escapades was on the extra side.
I have continued to the second book and for those who feel like I do, the second book is more focused on action and I’m enjoying it more.
I felt like the narrator did a good job of keeping me in the moment and keeping the characters differentiated. She is a little zealous at times but I got used to it. I liked her prosody enough to outweigh her aggressiveness.

You have been warned
Revisado: 07-31-22
People complaining about the vapidness of the female lead, she is a teenager and it’s a book written for YA. It is my opinion that if the story is taken for what it is, then it stands on its own as a really fun read. I personally enjoyed the strong female characters, the female narrator and it is written by a strong female fantasy writer.
The story itself is fun, you need to listen to understand the lore being developed, and it goes on for several volumes after this. I did read the series before listening so that may have helped in my understanding of the audio story. I enjoyed this reading immensely and initially I resisted because when I listened to the sample about a year ago, I thought it sounded awful and I didn’t want it to ruin one of my favorite series. Try it out and if you don’t like it, audible has policies in place for that.

At last, Mitford's rector and lifelong bachelor Father Tim has married his talented and vivacious neighbor Cynthia. Now, of course, they must face love's challenges: new sleeping arrangements for Father Tim's sofa-sized dog, Cynthia's urge to decorate the rectory Italian-villa-style, and the growing pains of the thrown-away boy who's become like a son to the rector.

Wonderful story, drags a little but worth it
Revisado: 06-07-22
Loved the story. It gets a bit bogged down in description, and another character gets several minutes to describe what they must overcome to become a functioning member of society again.
If anyone in Audible reads this, the next book is Out to Canaan. The reviews should speak volumes that a majority of people neither want an abridged version or any narrator other than Mr. McDonough. I’ve heard this story before but I was looking forward to doing so again but it is no longer available unabridged. PLEASE bring this title back in its unabridged version.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Revisado: 10-13-12
I loved the book when I read it, thought the movie was good, but this recording should take all of the acclaim from the previous two! The narrators for these characters were just so amazing, and the storyline was perfect. The entire work is just spot-on, and I would definitely listen to it again.
This review is only short b/c I think repeating over and over again how much I liked it is a little ridiculous, but The Help really is that good. Listen to it.

IT...the story isn't much clearer than the title
Revisado: 10-13-12
I have always heard how terrifying It was to read, plus it is written by Stephen King. That in itself I thought I was guaranteed a good listen.
Unfortunately, I was mistaken. To sit through a book for 40+ hours, you should be gripped at least most of the time through. I had a hard time getting through multiple chunks of the storyline, and ended up fast-forwarding through bits, which I NEVER do b/c I hate to miss any of a story. But some parts were simply superfluous. Instead of being 40-something hours, it probably could have been written much better in 24 hours.
The performance was great. Mr. Weber got into the story, maintained good voices and appropriate emotional responses. For a book with a stutterer in it, I thought he did a great job with the acting of that particular voice. It did not bug me as it bugged other readers.
*********************POSSIBLE SPOILER PLOT POINTS************************************
I just.....well......really. A clown? That's what scared all of these children so badly? A clown? I could understand if the bad aura transformed into a clown as the target for one child, but that was it's primary form of terror? I just can't buy it. I truly wanted to be scared by the book, but when the primary terrifying forms are a clown, and later, a big spider, I just can't get past it. And I really wanted to. I hung in there for the entire mess just to see how it all panned out. Bits of it were interesting, bits were just gross, others disturbing, but the entire piece felt disconnected.
In the explanation of what "It" actually was, I was lost. There was mention of a Turtle, which I'm still unclear about, and the dark cloud with lights confused me. I'm not sure Mr. King wants us to know what "It" was, and I prefer resolution in my horror stories, especially ones where the story didn't make much sense the further I got into it.
Finally, I am glad I "read" it so I can say I did, but at the same time, it was much scarier when I didn't know what it was. I almost watched the movie on TV once, but it seemed silly to me. Maybe today's horror movies have ruined me for books? Based on my reaction to Salem's Lot by Stephen King (which I highly recommend) I think it was this story, not me.
