Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

A "for real" page turner
Revisado: 12-05-22
May I say one thing? "Girl, I was hanging onto every word you read and every word you said."
Thank you Ms. Davis for your honesty. At times your journey was rough, but never oppressive and hopeless, Your little 8 year-old self has ego strength even when scared. So glad your older sisters are heroes, so glad your family has you. So proud of you. So proud to be a dark-skinned black woman. Thank you again.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 03-08-22
I enjoyed the story. I bought the book and listened to it on Audible because I enjoyed the story so much. Beverly Jenkins does not disappoint me ever. There are many exciting moments in the book with the help of first rate dialogue, skilled writing techniques to build tension between characters leading to unexpected and "didn't see that comings climaxes, I was pleased, and go so far as to say "happy". You could have knocked me over with a feather when I read/heard the ending. The narrator has improved from poor to average, and unfortunately this does take away from a great story. Hopefully she is working on improving the voices of the male characters to give them dimension, to make them attractive and approachable, instead of grating. The voices for Mal and Barrett sounded the same, which made me want to put my hands over my ears. However, she nailed Riley! If the narrator would limiting the cute little girl voices to the kids and teenage girl characters that would be great. It was hard to take Lily serious with the voice she was given. Tamara's voice needs to sound like the vigorous, healthy, dynamic sage that she is, and not a little ole lady. Please add grown women voices to the adult women characters.

Great character development. Loved some characters and not so much other characters. The folks determined to be hands on with the grandchildren and give them a better chance gave me hope.

On the eve of her 68th birthday, she has a booming beauty-supply empire, a gaggle of lifelong friends, and a husband whose moves still surprise. True, she’s carrying a few more pounds than she should be, but Loretha is not one of those women who think her best days are behind her - and she’s determined to prove wrong her mother, her twin sister, and everyone else with that outdated view of aging wrong. It’s not all downhill from here.

Life is worth living especially after 50 years old
Revisado: 09-11-21
The life in this book has many shades and hues. It's black and it's white. It's full of color and the absence of color. The challenges faced by the protagonist in "It's Not All Downhill from Here" are real. The main character's reactions and responses are highly relatable. Thank goodness for her friendships and her family. Thank goodness for her good relationships and her not so good relationships. These all make for opportunities to have other wise women and men mentor her and the readers. Thank goodness for multi-generational families and various viewpoints. Viewpoints and perspectives change if one is willing to be open to other egos. Here's to that keep moving forward attitude. Hope you enjoy the story and the voice that reads the story as much as I did. Ah-mazing.

Read &listened to lots of books, this the best
Revisado: 09-07-21
The best book I've read and listened to period, and I've read, listened and enjoyed a lot of books in the past fourteen months. The ride, aka the listen was a fun, funny, and insightful walk down memory lane. I laughed, smiled, and shook my head remembering when! Listening to Terry McMillian read her books convinces me that no one could do a better job. Her dry wit and genuine delivery keeps it real. For me, the protagonist is someone I want to know and someone I know and love. She has insight into her own behavior. Georgia is her own person, she's fierce, opinionated, blunt, as well as kind and patient. The story is strong and realistic, like real life. The multi-generational aspect is appealing, attractive and embracing. Thank you Terry McMillian. Well done and keep up the good work.

Outstanding, makes me want to shout!
Revisado: 08-09-21
Walter Mosley has written another smart, intelligent, and funny Easy Rawlings novel. Here is a character with a moral center, a man with many facets and insight into his behavior. A nice badass. The only thing missing is for Easy to fell madly in love and marry a good black woman. It happens and could happen to easy. A woman as interesting as Easy, with many facets who plays well with Easy and matches him in banter, wit, intellect, and life experience.
This well written story lived up to all my expectations. Thank you Walter Mosley. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next Easy Rawlings story.

Love and History a great combination
Revisado: 06-06-21
I love love love the romance in this book. The history lesson on the intersection between Native Americans and Black Americans was top rate, The introduction of Black Americans moving to Mexico to escape Jim Crop introduced a topic that would be great for future Beverly Jenkins books.
The interaction between Leah and Ryder drove me crazy, in a good way. Two strong and interesting characters with many facets, flaws and perfections. I love how they loved each other. Sam was a calming and charming character. He was great. I wish I had a Sam in my life.
