A guideline without guidance

One of the main building blocks of this book is “finding your superpower. Thomas talk heavily about his superpower but in a sense that he always knew what his superpower was. The book continues to build upon this idea and how to capitalize on this superpower.

But what if you don’t know what your superpower is? There’s no guidance on this. It’s as if we all know that we have this intuitive knowledge of our superpower, which surely many do, but I would guess the majority of those reading this book don’t. I purchased this book believing it would help to guide me onto a path of finding a “superpower” that I could then apply. There’s just no guidance. Missed the mark.

All bow hunting, little “endure”

I had hoped this book would be about what the title implies, enduring, from a more general standpoint. It’s not. It’s about enduring while bow hunting. If you’re into bow hunting this book is great for you. For folks who are looking for a more general message about perseverance and enduring there are better reads.

Goggins says this isn’t hero worship, but it is. That’s the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The book is very much hero worship, but the podcast style narrative with Goggins and Skolnick makes Goggins a lot more personable and his story less about hero worship and more about finding that inner strength that he unlocked. Definitely worth the listen.

Holy cow, anyone who gave this book 5 stars on performance has not listened. The narrator butchers pronunciation throughout and totally ignores punctuation. The entirety of the book sounds like one giant run-on sentence! Zero pacing, zero pause at sentence end. It really sounds as though she is reading just to finish.
The content of the book is fantastic but I recommend you read it and save your ears and mind!

Good, but with much recycled content

If this is your first self development book you will gain a lot, however if you are like me and you read a lot on self improvement there is a lot of recycling ideas here. There is a lot of talk of ideas and ways to make improvements but not much in the way of detailed plans. Anderson goes in depth talking about the details of different ideas of improvement and success but there the details on how to get there are much less in depth. As I said, this is a great starting point.
I did enjoy his personification of different ideals and behaviors in the stories of Fred, Frank, and Francis. But again, these stories were essentially “here’s what Francis does to be successful...” with little application in to how to actually apply it.
The stories of the Wisconsin Basketball team also add to the storytelling.
I would recommend this to a beginner in the journey toward self improvement.

Sleep on the floor and don’t shower... and eat food off the floor.

While this book provides some semblance of history and a look into three lives of Spartans and Special Forces, much of the guidance in this book is nonsensical and doesn’t apply to normal life, or just doesn’t lend to the idea of developing mental toughness. There are several strategies that are plainly nonsensical, they have no end game in mind - they simply make you uncomfortable for the sake of being uncomfortable.
Take for example these strategies for developing mental toughness: take cold showers, sleep on the floor with no pillows or blankets, eat food off the floor, and don’t shower.
If you are a Spartan or Specials Forces, yes these make sense. You’re preparing for the potential of facing these types of things while in combat situations. But I’m assuming most people reading this are living much more normal lives. If there was a goal in these ideas then maybe I could get behind it, but the author literally gives no reason other than “mental toughness.” Is it really mentally tough to sleep on the floor and not shower or is it just a way to be uncomfortable?
I chose this book hoping for guidance in developing tools and strategies to become more steadfast in good daily habits. To be more mentally tough in idea of achieving goals. This book doesn’t lead you there. It leads you to something more like caveman toughness with no real personal development in mind.
