Historia
In the small town of Ealing, Iowa, Austin and his best friend, Robby, have accidentally unleashed an unstoppable army. An army of horny, hungry, six-foot-tall praying mantises that only want to do two things. This is the truth. This is history. It’s the end of the world. And nobody knows anything about it. You know what I mean. Funny, intense, complex, and brave, Grasshopper Jungle brilliantly weaves together everything from testicle-dissolving genetically modified corn to the struggles of recession-era, small-town America in this groundbreaking coming-of-age stunner.

Great story, great performance
Revisado: 06-02-24
This is a punk rock style novel for obsessive kids with lots of hormones. At first, I thought the narrator was giving us a weird delivery that somehow fit, but knowing more about Andrew Smith I now believe it's just a really good presentation of somebody who falls in the highly fictional side of the Autism or ADHD spectrums.

Historia
Some of the classic collection of Lady Gregory's translations of the Irish stories of Finn McCool. Lady Gregory's translation of these old Irish stories was described by the poet W. B. Yeats as "the best book that has come out of Ireland in my time." It contains translations by Lady Gregory of medieval manuscript versions of myths and legends drawn from a pre-historic oral tradition which still survives today.

Revisado: 05-30-24
Seriously. I would like more of this. This is only a few selections from Lady Gregory's work. Is there no interest in a bigger version? It has to be public domain. Throw up a Kickstarter. You can borrow my copy. I'll pre-order. What do I gotta do?

Historia
From its inception, hip-hop has challenged ideas about morality, religion, and truth. Genuinely, it’s a philosophical genre. Both philosophers and hip-hop artists think about God, death, and justice, among other things. But rarely do members of these two groups talk to one another about these issues. This is a shame, given that both hip-hop and philosophy have a rich history in deep thinking and have produced exemplary thinkers.

I did not give this 5 stars because it was too short. Every lecture is a banger. It's worth your time. The last lecture had me entranced. This could be so much deeper. Please, Great Courses, pass the mic back to Mr. Hogan.

Historia
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis.

So Much Empathy
Revisado: 04-15-24
Wow. I came across this gem listening to a lecture on apocalyptic horror. The lecturer mentioned it alongside Sean of the Dead, because both make great use of humor. Fair! But this book is so much more than funny and existentially terrifying. It broke my heart and reassembled it. It consoled me and encouraged me. Kira Jane Buxton just took the Zed-throne from Max Brooks in my personal literature pantheon. Thanks.

Historia
No subject is bigger than reality itself, and nothing is more challenging to understand, since what counts as reality is undergoing continual revision and has been for centuries. The quest to pin down what's real and what's illusory is both philosophical and scientific, a metaphysical search for ultimate reality that goes back to the ancient Greeks. For the last 400 years, this search has been increasingly guided by scientists, who create theories and test them in order to define and redefine reality.

Do You Need A Podcast Hug?
Revisado: 08-01-23
I discovered the Blindboy Podcast right after it began, and I just wasn't ready. I came back to it in 2022, after having a huge metamorphosis during COVID.
Hearing an intelligent Irishman talk about his own mental health, how to treat each other, the vital importance of art, and totemic otters provided me with a role model I respect and resonate with.
The first few feature some graphic and unsettling short stories from The Gospel According to Blindboy. After that the structure of the podcast settles and we get these brilliant discussions on psychology, art theory, literary criticism, and juicy explanations of weird historical moments.
Please give it a listen from the beginning.

This is the direction I want literature to head. It's beautifully written, entertaining, and hints and what it takes to be both good and heroic in real world ways.

Historia
In The Lives of a Cell, Dr. Lewis Thomas opens up to the listener a universe of knowledge and perception that is perhaps not wholly unfamiliar to the research scientist; but the world he explores is also one of men and women, of complex interrelationships, old ironies, peculiar powers, and intricate languages that give identity to the alienated and direction to the dependent. This remarkable work offers a subtle, bold vision of humankind and the world around us - a sense of what gives life - from a writer who seems to draw grace and strength from the very substance of his subject.

I'm Smitten
Revisado: 05-22-22
This is a fantastic representation of the scope of science as it approaches the supernatural.
that asymptote trajectory, the brinkmanship, the audacity. *Chef's Kiss,*. I started this a week after I began listening to a great presentation of the Bhagavad Gita, but I don't think the author would be surprised.
His grasp of language and the evolutionary purpose of storytelling is mind-blowing. If you have a thirsty mind, drink. Listen to this book.
Great choice of narrator, but Grover Gardner always is!
