Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

WAAAAAY too much violence and suffering
Revisado: 06-19-16
Any additional comments?
This gentle reader could not wait to get to the, presumably, happy ending. Many will not mind the de-humanizing treatment of some of the protagonists and will see the violent and bloody treatment as the only way to achieve the happy-ever-after ending. As for me, NO WAY to ever again seek to navigate this kind of sad (but no doubt based in truth) struggle.

If you like lyrical, suspenseful writing....?
Revisado: 02-11-16
What made the experience of listening to Leaving Time the most enjoyable?
then this is the book you will listen to deliberately and slowly. I have to admit that I'm a sucker for a book that combines a soupçon of mystery with a mesmerizing plot and glorious writing. Throw in some insight into the attitudes and behavior of our creature companions...as well as inspiration about humans can learn from animal behavior...and I'm IN!
What did you like best about this story?
I'm pride myself on being able to "figure" out the resolution. Not this time!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wanted to listen to this book without every taking a break; at the same time, I wanted to drag it out so it wouldn't end!
Any additional comments?
This is my first Jodi Picoult book. (Shame on me.) I look for opportunities to rectify that problem. So grateful that my sister gave me this tip. What a book!

Waaaay too much!
Revisado: 07-10-15
This book is a relentless, unending, unendurable torrent of brutality, pain, suffering and torture with almost no relief...ever.
You can see that it isn't my idea of a good read
However, I decided to struggle on and zone out for some of the not particularly suspenseful struggle. Just more incredibly horrific sadism. The level of brutality, by the way, is never satisfactorily explained.
It is a mash-up of Lost, Stepford Wives, the Lottery, Planet of the Apes and Hunger Games.
The end is interesting and clever but not worth the long time coming. This should have been a short story.

Spellbinding and mesmerizing
Revisado: 10-29-14
What made the experience of listening to The Thirteenth Tale the most enjoyable?
The language in this book...so beautifully read and expressed...is lyrical and delightful. So few writers stretch the boundaries of speech to reach to the tallest and smallest words. Diane Sutterfield plays words like Itzak Perlman plays the violin
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Thirteenth Tale?
When governess Hester sees a ghost pair, rushes headlong into destiny...and Sutterfield takes that moment and holds it in the air for the reader to breath later...I felt the power of a magnificent storyteller.
What about Bianca Amato and Jill Tanner ’s performance did you like?
American listeners love the sound of cultured British accents, and these readers gave us a full measure. They played upon each other's rhythms and made the story sing.
If you could rename The Thirteenth Tale, what would you call it?
Angels on Fire
Any additional comments?
Thanks, Audible, for recommending the readers' performance. I would never have known about this book otherwise, and I really loved it.

Encouraging, challenging, informational
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I really didn't want this book to end.
Any additional comments?
Young women will be reminded of the ground on which their current opportunities are built. They (and male readers) will get great management tips and will learn how women (supported by partners) can reach their goals and be encouraged not to "settle" for less than they can be.

In Cooked, Pollan discovers the enduring power of the four classical elements - fire, water, air, and earth - to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink. Apprenticing himself to a succession of culinary masters, Pollan learns how to grill with fire, cook with liquid, bake bread, and ferment everything from cheese to beer. Each section of Cooked tracks Pollan’s effort to master a single classic recipe using one of the four elements.

Pollan does it again! Brilliant and compelling
Revisado: 11-10-13
If you could sum up Cooked in three words, what would they be?
Only Michael Pollan can take the idea of how we cook our food and make that most basic of activities relate to who we are and how we came to be human.
What did you like best about this story?
I was intrigued by the idea that we are the only animals who cook our food...and that may be what, in fact, what allowed our brains to get enough energy-dense meals fast enough to allow our energy-hog brains to develop. Fire also took us from solitary hunter/gatherers to social beings. The last chapter, about fermentation, was absolutely fascinating. What we have done to damage the microflora we need in our co-evolution with the microbial world is the information we need to make better decisions as a society.
Have you listened to any of Michael Pollan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've never heard Michael Pollan read before, and, of course, he is the perfect voice for his words. He is a charming and engaging reader. (In a tiny comment, he do wish he say genu-in rather then genu-wine.)
Any additional comments?
I am an unabashed fan of this writer whose brilliance and intriguing topics touch all of us in such fundamental ways!

Historia
This powerful and breathtaking novel is the story of four cadets who have become bloodbrothers. Together they will encounter the hell of hazing and the rabid, raunchy and dangerously secretive atmosphere of an arrogant and proud military institute. They will experience the violence. The passion. The rage. The friendship. The loyalty. The betrayal. Together, they will brace themselves for the brutal transition to manhood... and one will not survive.

Revisado: 07-30-12
Where does The Lords of Discipline rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book ranks among the best of the books I've heard.
Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene is the dramatic revelation at the house in the woods where the cadet torture takes place.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Dan John Miller was the perfect voice for these characters. His accent and talent are incredible, but I was surprised at how many words he mispronounced. It seems someone in the editing booth could have helped with this.
