Historia
The City may be under siege, but everyone still has to make a living. Take Notker, the acclaimed playwright, actor and impresario. Nobody works harder, even when he's not working. Thankfully, it turns out that people appreciate an evening at the theatre even when there are large rocks falling out of the sky. But Notker is a man of many talents and all the world is, apparently, a stage.

Now that is an unlikeable main character...
Revisado: 08-20-23
The weakest of the three books, but it provides a great story. After the first book, it takes a while to get into the feel of the story, as it seems disjointed at first. But, still good humor, great world building,

Historia
A siege is approaching, and the city has little time to prepare. The people have no food and no weapons, and the enemy has sworn to slaughter them all. To save the city will take a miracle, but what it has is Orhan. A colonel of engineers, Orhan has far more experience with bridge building than battles, is a cheat and a liar, and has a serious problem with authority. He is, in other words, perfect for the job.

Laugh out loud dry humor, more alternate history
Revisado: 08-20-23
I really enjoyed this series, more so the bookends (1st and 3rd book). Can be viewed as fantasy, but more of an alternate history of a Constantinople-like city. The main character has fabulous dry humor, a bit of an anti-hero, he is an outsider, an army engineer in medieval times, a reluctant savior for a city that doesn't deserve to be saved. Some might say a bit anti-climactic, but that's why there are 2 other books.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Way to grow Darrow!
Revisado: 08-20-23
I really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Great character development of Darrow and Cascius. It didn't try to keep the pace of DA, anyway, if you read the first 5, you're gonna read this one, and be pleased.

Historia
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China over seventy years ago, five paramount leaders have shaped the fates and fortunes of the nation and the ruling Chinese Communist Party: Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping. Under their leaderships, China has undergone an extraordinary transformation from an undeveloped and insular country to a comprehensive world power. In this definitive study, renowned Sinologist David Shambaugh offers a refreshing account of China's dramatic post-revolutionary history through the prism of those who ruled it.

More than Leaders, great survey of Post-Mao China
Revisado: 08-20-23
Does a great job, keeping it interesting, describing Modern China,. it is actually more than about the leaders, gives the reader a better understanding of how the Chinese government works.
