Historia
Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

I really liked it
Revisado: 02-01-08
I must be listnening to a different book than some of these reviewers. This is an excellent work, well written, well plotted and well drawn engaging characters. But, what really was fun for me as a professional historian was the enjoyment of picking out Weber's historical situations. Anything that mixes the Medici Papacy with the Battles of Trafalger and Lepanto in a 16th century setting is just great. Like many other reviewers I can't wait for the sequel. On the other hand I just might get it at Amazon so I don't have to wait.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Waiting for the Sequel
Revisado: 11-01-07
This book impressed me. I thought the plot was very original, the characters well drawn and interesting and the reading nicely done. There are a lot of he said's as is usual with a new writer but you quickly get used to them. Overall the book was very enjoyable. The sequel is is the bookracks now, can't wait for Audible to get it.

It is 1536 and the expert swordsman Jean Rombaud has been brought over from France by Henry VIII to behead Anne Boleyn. But on the eve of her execution, Rombaud swears a vow to the ill-fated queen. He promises to bury her six-fingered hand, symbol of her rumored witchery, at a sacred crossroads. From a battle between slave galleys, through the hallucinations of St Anthony's Fire to the fortress of an apocalyptic Messiah, Jean seeks to honor his vow.

A really good listen
Revisado: 01-29-05
This is a really fun book. As a historian I was impressed by the author's knowledge of 16th century Europe and the plot was fascinating. The only reason I only gave it a four was because after about the third escape from hopeless circumstances it was starting to remind me of Perils of Pauline, but the narration, plot and historiography were good enough for two listenings. This one's a keeper.

Max and Harry Kelso were born in the United States of a German mother and an American father. When they were boys, they were separated when their mother took Max to Germany. Excellent
Revisado: 07-15-04
Higgins at his best. Spans four decades seamlessly with enough plot twists to satisfy anyone. The only thing I take issue with is his maligning the name of arguably the greatest fighter pilot in history (Erich "Bubi" Hartmann) by giving him such a morally pathetic character in the book.
Despite that, this one is a keeper.

Historia
In the tradition of Daniel Boorstin, the co-founder of Omni delivers an original work of history that demonstrates why modern science rests on a foundation built by ancient and medieval non-European societies. "If you think that modern science is rooted in the golden age of Greece, you owe it to yourself to [hear this] book," says Library Journal.

Not for the faint of heart
Revisado: 02-27-03
This book is not for those who merely have a general interest in science and/or archaeology. The author gets extremely technical at times. I have two Master's degrees and at a couple of points he totally lost me. The author is repetative and loves to belabor the obvious. The book reads like a textbook but some of the conclusions are so far outside academic norms they stretch credulity. I wish I hadn't made the choice
