I’d never read Rachelle Ayala before, and now I never will again. The writing was subpar. The romantic parts were trite and saccharine. But mostly I absolutely hated how casually she dealt with homelessness, especially veteran homelessness and PTSD. It was also almost anti-feminist in the way that she made the main character feel selfish/guilty in her choice to become a single mother. I typically like a fluffy Christmas romance. This just sucked. And the narrator wasn’t very good.

I don’t normally pan books, but this was truly awful. The writing was choppy and repetitive (not to mention that one whole chapter was literally repeated 3 times) and the narration was just bad. I’m all for a fluffy Christmas read, but this doesn’t even qualify. I honestly wonder if this was written by a middle schooler, because that’s about the maturity level of this book. At least it was quick and free.

The narration was truly fantastic! This was so beautifully written. Bradbury has the soul of a poet! I loved how this story centers around the friendship of two young boys, but also deals with the relationship between father and son, and anyone facing their own mortality. Weird and wonderful, this classic is one that I’ll definitely be revisiting in future Octobers.

Richard Armitage could read me the phone book and I’d be enthralled.

This book is a classic for a reason. But I have a serious voice crush on Richard Armitage, so that’s the main reason I bought this audiobook. His narration was brilliant and truly made this a wonderful listen.

The book is fascinating. The narration was excellent and sounded great, but the music and several of the interviews sounded a bit tinny. I expected better auto quality.

A great book with a rich and exciting story. Great narration by Kenneth Branagh just adds to the emersion into the story.

As a cisgender woman, I wanted to read this for the same reason I read any book written by or about someone different from myself; for a better understanding of their lives. This book is fiction, but it deals with very real issues. Gender identity, sexual orientation, and the prejudices and dangers that unfortunately so often accompany people dealing with those things. Reading this has reinforced my belief that we need more empathy in this world, more understanding, more respect... more love. 3 1/2 stars for the story itself, 4 1/2 stars for the narration.

I completely loved it. I listened to the whole thing in one day. (No, that's not sad. And yes, I do actually have a life). I just couldn't put it down! It was so smart and funny and relatable, on so many levels. Seriously, she is me. She is my best friend. She is so many women that I know. It felt thoroughly open and honest, and I think because of that, it was easy to see parts of myself, and parts of people I know in her narrative. I'm giving this a full five stars. I know I normally reserve that high of a rating for things like the Harry Potter series, but at least in audio form, this was right up there. I probably would just give this four stars if I read this myself, but the audio made it such a fun experience. I laughed, I cried (well, almost), and it made me think and reflect on times in my own life. I actually laughed out loud a lot. So much that I feel noticeably happier at the end of the day. (A nice little bonus from my binge listening.) So if you know who Anna Kendrick is, and have ever found her funny on Twitter, do yourself a favor and listen to (or at least read) this book. You're welcome.
