Historia
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, Southern Black community and running away at age 16, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: Their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her Black daughter in the same Southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for White, and her White husband knows nothing of her past.

Beautiful - rare & wonderful to find a completely new story
Revisado: 10-01-21
I thought this was a beautiful book. Mostly read wonderfully. The story is 99% from the point of view of various women. The kinky thing I felt was imperfect is the voicing of the male characters, who all sounded the same, without nuance. But overall, a great read. (I’m perplexed by the negative reviews.)

Historia
Samantha Raymond's life has begun to come apart: her mother is ill, her teenage daughter is increasingly remote, and at fifty-two she finds herself staring into "the Mids"—that hour of supreme wakefulness between three and four in the morning in which women of a certain age suddenly find themselves contemplating motherhood, mortality, and, in this case, the state of our unraveling nation.

Unusual, personal and powerful
Revisado: 09-18-21
A story that changes direction several times, about a mother entering menopause and her adolescent daughter coming into her sexuality. Draws you in gradually and beautifully. Narration most very good. Sometimes not perfect on the male voices but it is 90% female. Sweet, sharp and poignant.
I first heard about this book through NYTimes book review podcast.

Historia
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

I had read this 30 years ago and only vaguely remembered it. This was such a beautiful performance of a major work - listening was a journey and completely delightful. MG’s reading style is somewhat unique - different than what I usually like. She doesn’t voice each character but she reads with so much empathy that you just identify with all of the major and minor characters.
Highly highly recommended.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
A frank, smart, and captivating memoir by the daughter of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Small Fry is Lisa Brennan-Jobs' poignant story of a childhood spent between two imperfect but extraordinary homes. Scrappy, wise, and funny, young Lisa is an unforgettable guide through her parents' fascinating and disparate worlds. Part portrait of a complex family, part love letter to California in the '70s and '80s, Small Fry is an enthralling audiobook by an insightful new literary voice.

Less than expected
Revisado: 02-26-19
I think my problem with Small Fry was that it was mostly about Lisa’s early childhood and it felt like it was written in a child’s voice. Or possibly that was the narrator coloring the text. This is in contrast with Tara Westover’s “Educated” which is also a memoir of early childhood but never feels like you’re in the mind of a child.
Small Fry is good, just not what I expected.

Historia
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colors of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons.

Complex wonderful tale
Revisado: 08-05-18
Oddly for the first half it seemed somewhat mundane if also interesting. About halfway through, just at the moment when everyone starts having sex, the plot gets completely complex and engaging and doesn’t let up. A very beautiful story of intertwined families.

Revisado: 05-21-18
This is such a wonderful story of multigenerational gay life, and is beautifully read by Mr. West. The book is cinematic in evoking a time just before AIDS when the gay world was in its nascent revery of youth and beauty. My favorite book in some time.

Historia
This magnificent novel, sequel to The Warden and second in the Chronicles of Barsetshire, satirizes the struggle for ascendancy among the clergy of a cathedral city. The contest is between the outgoing church authorities led by Archdeacon Grantly and the newcomers led by Mrs. Proudie and her protégé, the ambitious Mr. Obadiah Slope. Each wishes to become the dominant voice in the quiet diocese of Barchester, and they contend for the newly vacant post of warden of Hiram's Hospital.

The best of the Barchesters
Revisado: 03-20-17
Where does Barchester Towers rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is just a wonderful reading and a wonderful book. Trollope at his funniest and most insightful about the way people are vs they way they want to be. Of the series, I think the first "The Warden" is very good and this one is excellent. After which the themes tend to repeat and I often think the later books could be half their length. This one, however, was a delight and I was happy it lasted as long as it does.
What does Simon Vance bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I would listen to anything Simon Vance reads -- and you should too. He brings incredible life to each and every character and I have no idea who he keeps all the voices and intonations straight, chapter after chapter. When a young lady and an old woman are having a conversation, in your mind you only see them, not him. And you know their class... everything about them from his wonderful voice.

Historia
In a rising Saudi Arabian city, far from weary, recession-scarred America, a struggling businessman pursues a last-ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and finally do something great. In A Hologram for the King, Dave Eggers takes us around the world to show how one man fights to hold himself and his splintering family together in the face of the global economy’s gale-force winds. This richly layered novel is a powerful evocation of our contemporary moment.

Disappointing Eggers
Revisado: 11-01-16
I have truly loved Dave Eggars nonfiction books. They are works of human beauty.
Unfortunately his books of fiction don't seem to Carry the same humanity. The story of Hologram lacks direction, and there are no people you could attach yourself and say "I would like to be, or to know this person". Unlike his earlier books, there is no one you can just identify with and really care about. It was a sad journey getting to the end.
