Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Fascinating
Revisado: 03-23-25
Sarah Wynn Williams does a great job of reading her beautifully written tell-all memoir of her years at Facebook. The book eloquently describes the descent of this company from something that could have made our world a better place to what it is now: a tool used by dictators and their wannabe imitators to manipulate and divide populations. "Careless People" is the story of people who have become fabulously wealthy while being utterly indifferent to those they harm.

It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....

Outstanding reading!!
Revisado: 12-13-24
While the story took a little too long to build, I didn't mind because the reader did such a beautiful job of conveying the dark, brooding atmosphere of the book. While this tale did have some violence in it, there are no graphic descriptions that might have given me nightmares. It's definitely worth hanging in there; the ending is very thrilling.

This audiobook was like listening to a political thriller, except that all the events were ripped straight from the headlines and Woodward's interviews. One of my favorites so far this year!

this book was one of my childhood favorites. I first read it 60 years ago and I remember laughing and crying!! I've never heard any audiobooks of it before. so glad I listened to this one. The reader did an excellent job with all the different voices, and really drew out the humor and pathos of this lovely story.

Historia
A personal indictment of the institute of slavery in the Southern United States, as witnessed directly by Fanny Kemble, a British actress in 1838 and 1839. In a very personal way, she relates her many varied experiences, efforts to make life easier for the slaves despite her husband's stubborn resistance. As an English citizen, she had seen the total end of slavery throughout the British Empire in 1833, just a few years before her journey to Georgia. She ends her account with a stirring defense of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Revisado: 08-29-23
This eyewitness account of slavery's horrors is an eloquent rebuttal to recent claims that enslaved people in any way "benefitted" from their condition. The reader does a wonderful job of conveying Frances Kemble's intelligence and compassion. Excerpts from this book should be included in every US History text in our country.

Historia
Always Coming Home is Ursula K. Le Guin’s fictional ethnography of the Kesh, a people of the far future living in a post-apocalyptic Napa Valley. Having survived ecological catastrophe brought on by relentless industrialization, the Kesh are a peaceful people who reject governance and the constriction of genders, limit population growth to prevent overcrowding and preserve resources, and maintain a healthy community in which everyone works to contribute to its well-being. This richly imagined story unfolds through a series of narrated “translations” that illuminate individual lives.

I first read this book in 1988. It has only improved in subsequent readings. The story invokes a magical version of California's North Coast sometime in the 19th century with gorgeous language and atmosphere. The narrator does a terrific job. So glad I treated myself to this audiobook!
