Historia
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

Best in a Decade
Revisado: 03-13-21
This novel - this wonderfully deep, complex, and all-consuming novel, has moved me and inspired me in a way no other novel has for the past decade. Being an avid reader historical and women’s fiction, that’s saying something for me. I rarely if ever give a novel five stars, but if I could give this novel more than five I would. Jennifer Lim is, I am convinced, the best possible choice for a narrator of this audiobook, delivering a performance that is simultaneously authentic and affecting whilst being entertaining, engrossing and emotive. Too many adjectives? I could go on, but I’ll leave it at this: if I could only recommend one novel this year to every reader I know, it would be The Island of the Sea Women - as deeply moving and complex as the South Korean sea and the haenyeo women it so vividly describes.

Noteworthy!
Revisado: 01-26-20
This book should be required reading for every young woman and young man as they reach dating age. I believe in the message of this book. It is well researched, backed by endless case studies, and provides women (and/or abused partners, their families, friends and therapists) a guiding light and a sense of freedom from their partners blame. Everyone should read this book!

Historia
A coming-of-age tale for the young and naïve 17-year-old Catherine Morland, Northanger Abbey takes a decidedly comical look at themes of class, family, love and literature. Revelling in the sensationalist - and extremely popular - Gothic fiction of her day, the story follows Catherine out of Bath to the lofty manor of the Tilneys, where her overactive imagination gets to work constructing an absurd and melodramatic explanation for the death of Mrs Tilney, which threatens to jeopardise her newly forged friendships.

Austen brought to life!
Revisado: 06-18-18
The best cast possible to play and dramatize this wonderful book. Read with so much expression and feeling that you feel as though you have been transported back into Austen’s time. Simply delightful!
