Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Best performance of any audiobook
Revisado: 12-10-18
Extremely entertaining, one heck o a performance. At first I was a little put off by the theatrical format, but was soon sucked in. I don’t think I’ve ever finished a book so fast.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The narrator was incredible. He makes you scared in a fun way.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Canterville Ghost?
This is a great book to pop on as you're going to bed. Open your window, feel the fresh air, tuck in and enjoy. It's funny and spooky!
What about Rupert Degas’s performance did you like?
Everything. If there was a perfect performance on an audiobook, this would be it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.

Historia
Thanks to the financial security and material comforts provided by their father’s prosperous rickshaw business, 21-year-old Pearl Chin and her younger sister, May, are having the time of their lives. Though both sisters wave off authority and tradition, they couldn’t be more different, but both are beautiful, modern, and carefree...until the day their father tells them he has gambled away their wealth and that in order to repay his debts, he must sell the girls as wives to suitors who have traveled from California to find Chinese brides.

Would you try another book from Lisa See and/or Janet Song?
No.
What was most disappointing about Lisa See’s story?
She does a weird disclaimer about why she chooses certain words. If you believe in your story, why are you defending it before I even start? Also, there was a weird past tense/present tense. The story is going along in 1937, and then the character breaks character and says "and this is normal is this year, 1937" Well, if you are living in 1937, of course that's normal! Breaking character in a book? That's just nuts. It would be totally fine if it was someone in present day speaking about their life in the past, but it is literally set in 1937 with someone acknowledging that what they are doing is normal in 1937. We don't say "today I went to school and ate a sandwich, which is a normal thing for me to be doing in this year, which is 2014" It was just weird.
How could the performance have been better?
It was not the performer's fault.

Historia
Classic Kafka. Versatile actor Chris Hendrie brings this interesting, odd and unusual tale to vivid life. This unabridged novella is the bizarre story of a young man, Gregor Samsa, who is mysteriously and instantaneously transformed into a monstrous cockroach. Need I say more?

Horrible performance
Revisado: 08-17-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would NOT recommend this recording. I love this story, but this particular performance is so bad I can't even finish a two hour book. Perhaps the audio editing is to blame, but it's extremely obvious that they cut out all the pauses and, in turn, the text is just one huge run-on sentence! There are no breaths, breaks or pauses. It's exhausting to listen to.
What did you like best about this story?
The words and story are phenomenal. This edition/recording is horrible.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
There is odd emphasis on the wrong words, and all the breaks, breaths and pauses have been removed. The beginning of the book is great, but from about 45 mins on, the whole story is a run-on sentence and you can't follow what is happening anymore.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Absolutely.

The narrator is very disappointing.
Revisado: 06-21-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Giver to be better than the print version?
The first half of the book will give you chills, but the second half is unsatisfying. The cartoony narrator really ruins the whole feel too-- and makes it really obvious that this is a children's book.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
REALLY cartoony voices. It took a haunting chilling book, and made it into a Saturday morning cartoon.
