Wonderful Book - WRONG NARRATOR LISTED
Revisado: 01-31-24
I got this book fhrough the Plus Catalog. The narrator was John McDonough, one of my favorite narrators, I liked it so much that I decided to purchase it. However, when I received it, the narrator was listed as Francisco Rivela. When I tried to exchange it, I was told that they did not have the one narrated by John McDonough, so I got a refund.
After some thought, I decided to listen to the sample narrated by Francisco Rivela, only to find that it was actually narrated by John McDonough. I looked up Francisco Rivela and found that the books he narrates for Audible are in Spanish. "Sutter's Cross" has not been translated into Spanish. So, I repurchased the book.
I highly recommend this wonderful book and its excellent narrator.

Diisappointing
Revisado: 12-10-23
The title of this book is very deceiving. The dogs, are barely mentioned. They are almost just an afterthought. Because Mr. Cameron is known for his dog books, it is almost as if he felt pressured to include a few paragraphs with a dog.
The part about the father's job was unrealistic and ludicrous. The mother's illness was also unrealistic.
The grandfather was amuch better character, but aspects of his story have been used often, making it rather predictable.

Gentle Story
Revisado: 08-17-23
This is a nice, gentle Christmas story that takes place on the home front during WWII. It's told so well that the reader is almost transported back to that time.
It also deals with the difficult subject of death, making it bittersweet. Yet it ends with hope.

Couldn't Finish
Revisado: 02-13-23
Even if I need a break from it, I try to finish a book, because my mood might be different at another time. This was one of the worst books I've ever read/listened. I couldn't stand the main character. She was meant spirited and spent way too much time feeling sorry for herself. It was very depressing.

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Historia
Jamie MacFarlane has returned a hero from the Great War but with a stubborn chest wound. The government has sent him to their new thermal springs hospital in California "where it was hoped that the brilliant sunshine, the fruits, and the clean air, the eternal summer of a beneficent land" would heal him. But nothing has worked, and with his parents now deceased and no one to care for him, it seems the next step is a camp rife with tuberculosis. Realizing this, Jamie begins his great adventure on foot toward the ocean.

A Many Faceted Book
Revisado: 07-19-22
i love this book. It is hard to categorize. It is a combination of genres. -
Ms. Stratton-Porter's descriptions are like poetry. I normally get bored with description, but listening to her descriptions, especially of the gardens was almost like listening to music. They transport you to a beautul, tranquil place..
Of course, there is some technical information about bees. Much of this is in chapter 10. This was fascinating and presented in a way that it was truly part of the story and not just random facts.
The plot takes place at the end of WWI. Jamie McFarland is a wounded veteran for whom the doctors have little hope. He escapes the hospital and makes his way to California where he meets Little Scout and others who guide and inspire him. There are many twists and turns to his story, moving the plot along and definitely keeping the reader's interest.
The plot deals with the attitudes and values of post WWI America. However, it is not stuck there. Ms. Stratton-Porter was ahead of her time in many ways. Her views on the roles of women are far beyond her time.
There is almost no profanity, no gratuitous violence, and no steamy sex scenes, making for a relaxing and refreshing experience.

Historia
In this compilation of the five books in the best-selling Lineage of Grace series by Francine Rivers, we meet the five women whom God chose - Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. Each was faced with extraordinary - even scandalous - challenges. Each took great personal risk to fulfill her calling. Each was destined to play a key role in the lineage of Jesus Christ, the savior of the World.

Just ok.
Revisado: 06-26-22
The Old Testament novels were good, especially the one about Rahab. Ms. Rivers took too many liberties in her portrayal of Mary. For example, there is no evidence that she was related to James and John's father. This is only a minute detail, but the liberties that she takes with Mary's personality are far too controversial to discuss.
I am glad that she added the study guide at the end of each novel. Hopefully readers will not skip it and adhere to the fact that these novels are someone's interpretation and not completely true.
The narrator sometime seemed to drone on. She mispronounced several character names.

Historia
For vibrant, lovely Jean Suttman, the fellowship to study in Rome was the culmination of her dreams, until she undertook an innocent expedition to the ancient Temple of Mithra. From the moment she stepped into the pagan darkness and discovered the corpse of Albert, one of her fellow students, she was afraid. Not even the comforting presence of the perceptive and practical Jacqueline Kirby could erase the fear that was nourished by one small accident after another, "accidents" that came dreadfully close to killing her.

Very Disappointing
Revisado: 10-24-21
I'm so glad that I listened to "The Murders of Richard III" first., because if I hadn't I would not have read any more of Ms. Peters books. Obviously this is one of her early ones. The premise of the mystery was good, Actually getting there with the tedious exposition and characterization was not. It just seemed to drone on & on at times.
That being said, the main sleuth, Jacqueline Kirby was well developed and left you wanting to know more about her.
Grace Conklin, the narrator, was excellent.

The outcry when Conan Doyle pushed Sherlock Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls and the dismay when Freeling shot Van der Valk are as nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when Lorinda Lucas tries to dispose of Miss Petunia and her siblings, Lily and Marigold. Not only does the lid blow off the fictional village of St. Waldemar Boniface, but the literary colony of Brimful Coffers is shaken to its foundations.
