Great Recording

This is a huge improvement over the earlier recording of Equal Rites. Nice to get a female narrator for the witches series who can do sardonic wit and comedic timing.

Historia
As Wodehouse himself once noted, "Blandings has impostors like other houses have mice." On this particular occasion, there are two imposters, both intent on a dangerous enterprise. Lord Emsworth's secretary, the Efficient Baxter, is on the alert and determined to discover what is afoot - despite the distractions caused by the Honorable Freddie Threepwood's hapless affair of the heart.

mostly good

Recording is poorly edited, with loud breathing left in-between sections of narration. Otherwise, performance and story are good fun.

Historia
Spanning eras and cultures from ancient Rome to medieval England to 1950s Hollywood, Jennifer Wright's It Ended Badly guides you through the worst of the worst in historically bad breakups. In the throes of heartbreak, Emperor Nero had just about everyone he ever loved - from his old tutor to most of his friends - put to death. Oscar Wilde's lover, whom he went to jail for, abandoned him when faced with being cut off financially from his wealthy family.

Stories were interesting. Snarky one-liners were amusing. Sincere pop-psychology commentary was unnecessary to the book.

Eh
Revisado: 11-03-16
What did you like best about We Are Legion (We Are Bob)? What did you like least?
The story concept was good. The writing was not. It was more like reading the summary of a story than a story. There was no hint of suspense as everything was just delivered explicitly 'A happened. Then, B happened.' I can't recall once trying to figure out what was going to happen next, or how a character was going to behave. The humor also felt more like having a joke explained than hearing a joke delivered.
Has We Are Legion (We Are Bob) turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I read enough good sci-fi and fantasy that this won't impact my reading list.
Have you listened to any of Ray Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. He was fine, given the material he was working with.
Did We Are Legion (We Are Bob) inspire you to do anything?
No.

Historia
Who would ever guess that the beloved legend of Santa Claus involves a seldom-told tale of faith and friendship between two men -- one white and one black? Long ago, Santa Claus had an African partner named Pete and together they brought the spirit of Christmas to America's first settlers. These two forever changed the way families celebrate the holiday. But through the years, Pete's contribution was forgotten.

good but disorienting
Revisado: 09-17-10
The book was really very good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was listening to Orson Scott Card. I don't mean that it felt like a copy of OSC, just it had the same feel to it. It was imaginative and warm and interesting, without even a hint of humor.

Historia
James Orlebar Cloyster, in order to marry his true love, embarks on a scheme of such clever deception that he very nearly manages to ruin both his romance and his career. Told from multiple viewpoints - that of James, his fiancée, and friends - Not George Washington lampoons London society, literary pretension, the West End stage, playwrights, playgoers, bohemian life, and the newspapers of the day.

Great Book - Horrible Recording
Revisado: 08-14-09
Writing is great. Narration is good. Recording is the worst I've ever heard. Crackles and hissing would be fine - I've never been picky about sound quality. This has very frequent skipping where many words are missing. It could be whole sentences missing - it's hard to tell. There are authors where this would be less destructive of the story, but a Wodehouse book is about the beauty of the language and phrasing.
