Historia
It began in a women's club in London on a February afternoon. A discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed to "Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine..." lures four very different women away from the dismal British weather to San Salvatore, a castle high above a bay on the sunny Italian Riviera. There, the Mediterranean spirit stirs the souls of Mrs Arbuthnot, Mrs Wilkins, Lady Caroline Dester, and Mrs Fisher, and remarkable changes occur.

Loved everything
Revisado: 04-11-25
I never listen to books twice, but this is going to be one. I do that with. I loved the friendships of the women developing, the wonderful aromatic gardens the story was set in, the sly humor, and the glimpses at early feminism.

Historia
In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years?

Love this series

Narrator is exceptionally good. Such great tenderness he imbues. There’s just one mid-step with some out of date language used, but DC Smith is such a likable character.

Historia
This wise, hilarious novel reminds us why Zadie Smith has rocketed to literary stardom. On Beauty is the story of an interracial family living in the university town of Wellington, Massachusetts, whose misadventures in the culture wars—on both sides of the Atlantic—serve to skewer everything from family life to political correctness to the combustive collision between the personal and the political. Full of dead-on wit and relentlessly funny, this tour de force confirms Zadie Smith's reputation as a major literary talent.

When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

I had not read an Elizabeth Gaskell bath novel before and I’m so impressed. Even as an English lit major her name was unfamiliar to me. Narration is excellent. The story is wonderful.

Great story and characters
Revisado: 02-13-23
I’ve really enjoyed this series. My only critique, and it’s a big one, is that Ms Ellis falls back on a racist, imperialist trope that the continent of Africa is “primitive” “brutal” and over run with witch doctors who dissect living children for their hideous ritual ceremonies. Really? Is this the 1930’s? That was a shock and very disappointing.

Historia
At age 28, the doctors told Martina Clark she had HIV and five years to live. With a sense of nothing to lose, she dove into activism. Then, she fell into an international career, starting as the first openly HIV-positive person to work for UNAIDS in 1996. A mix of personal memoir, travel, humor and an up-close look at the squishy underbelly of the United Nations, My Unexpected Life follows her personal journey—emotional and physical—interwoven with her professional path.

I was drawn in immediately and lived through Martina’s memories as if I was there. I felt like a friend was telling me her story and many times I wanted to reach out and hug her. It’s quite a thing to he a survivor of two epidemics and quite another to tell that story so poignantly.

Such a compelling story and cast of characters. There are of course challenges in reading a text written and set in the Deep South. I’m not sure, for example, what to make of the portrayal of characters of mixed heritage - is it the author’s racism coming thru or an accurate depiction of views of that time. Anyway, a great read.

New favorite mystery series
Revisado: 12-11-22
Love the strong female characters, the inclusivity, the humor. Only thing I didn’t like was (spoiler alert) the typical trope of the Black cop character is the one that always dies.
